Rat saved my life!

By Dave Gudgeon

CARLISLE lifeguard Derek Banks is only alive today thanks to his pet rat.

The 27-year-old was just 15 minutes from death this morning after turning on
his chip pan and falling asleep after a night out with pals.

Smoke quickly filled the kitchen of his flat in John Johnston Court,
Harraby, and spread into his living room where he was slumped on the sofa.

But his pet rat, named Ratface, saved the day by squealing so loudly she
woke him up.

Derek, who works at the Center Parcs holiday complex near Penrith, said: "I've
got her to thank for being here today.

"I got home last night after drinking with friends and put the chip pan on.
I then went in the living room to watch TV and obviously fell asleep.

"The next thing I remember was Ratface screaming. The place was full of
smoke and I got out and rang the fire brigade.

"I think I've learned a lesson from this," said John, who is originally from
Clydebank in Scotland.

George Sanson, watch manager with white watch at Carlisle fire station.
said: "Derek is very lucky. His flat might be badly damaged but he was only
15 minutes from death.

"He is lucky that Ratface's cage was higher than him and she was able to
wake him.

"The lesson for everyone is to have smoke alarms fitted and to get them
checked on a weekly basis. We will fit them free."

Carlisle firefighters, who were called to the scene at about 2.45am, dealt
with the cooker fire using one hose reel.

I read that too in our national freebie paper 'Metro' ('...and finally',
page 4, Friday July 28th). On a second reading it's not so clear to me
Ratface was unharmed. Is it just me wondering that?

Also, can anyone get in touch with Derek Banks & tell him if he wants to
reward Ratface, he really ought to get her a rat friend, since it sounds
like she's kept alone which is not good.

I have that problem at the moment. Cleo finally died a couple of days ago,
and Squeak seems to be quite upset. I don't think big-scale loneliness has
sunk in yet, but I'm worried that no matter how much time I have her out, it
won't be enough, especially since she's not particularly interactive with
humans and prefers to run around and explore rather than be cuddled and
scritched. I don't really want to get more rats just yet, and when I do I'll
be getting males instead, so I'm not really sure what to do. She's still so
young-seeming and lively, even though her sister Bubble died a while back,
and Squeak's not a lot younger than Cleo was. Obviously I don't want her to
die, but then it seems unfair on her to make her live out the rest of her
life as a sole rat. I knew this situation would arrive sooner or later, but
having had lots of time to think about it I'm still no closer to a solution.
The only thing I could think of is letting somebody else take her into an
established colony, but I really don't want to lose her. It's a tricky
situation.
