Ropes that you can buy for dogs, hang it in the cage so they can climb,
parrot toys such as swings ect, again hang in cage. I give my guys toilet
roll cuboard insides which they like.

You should check out the Dapper Rat site.

dapper.com.au

There are a lot of good ideas for using household items so you don't
have to buy expensive toys. Rats are pretty destructive with just about
anything you give them, so it's probably best not to invest a lot of
money in toys if you don't have to. My rats get empty cereal boxes,
mismatched socks, and little scraps of fabric from my sewing room. They
also like rolls of unscented toilet paper (for shredding) and you can
wrap treats up in tissue paper and tie it up in their cage like a
little pinata. Mine also like brown paper lunch bags. They make great
crinkly noises, they're very shreddable, and good for general lurking.

I've given up buying my rats toys. Recently I gave them an old
telephone book and they're slowly working their way through it - it
makes for an exciting read :). A bit messy tho but they bustle about
carrying stips of paper to their box - very cute. I give them cardboad
boxes (small packing boxes) to play in.

The Dapper rat is a good web site. I like the idea of giving them a
container of dirt with grass planted in it, but I'm a bit concerned
about potential health problems (if any). I think they would love it
though.

I like the telephone book idea. I'll have to try that. I too am
interested in the digging box, but I haven't tried it yet for the same
concerns you have. Dapper suggests using sterilized dirt, but how does
one sterilize dirt? Microwave?

Gardeners have the answer:
http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/26342 for a discussion
and
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/gl_soil_water_other/article/0,1785,HGTV_3635_1382873,00.html
for a step by step method.

I've not tried this. Likewise, not let our rats have any dirt for
reasons of mould/bacteria & the (worse) mess I know they'll then make at
out time.

Thanks Michael. I might get brave enough sometime. You are right about
the mess for sure.

Isn't the print toxic?

Metallic inks are. Almost all other paper inks are vegetable based & safe.

Plastic children's toys (Barbie cars, houses, toy garages etc....) from
Charity shops - potentially dangerous bits removed. Cheap, last forever
and easy to clean.
