Mycoplasma in humans and rats are similar but distinguishable. There is
no cross transmission.
I remember bringing my son to the doctor when he was younger. The doctor
told him he had myco and he nearly fainted. He knows our rats die of
that. I had to explain to him that in humans, it is completely treatable.
I hope your wife feels better soon.

Wow -- the only person I know of who got myco was f---ed up pretty bad
by it. She was a local musician, and I covered her illness in my Texas
music column -- she was unable to perform for close to a year, so I
assumed she was very, very ill during that time. Here's what I wrote on
May 4, 2001:

"Also on our "get well" list: Sarah Dashew of the Ginger & Sarah Band,
almost fully recovered after falling ill on tour last summer in Europe.
That's nearly 10 months of battling bizarre viruses, including
Mycoplasma pneumonia -- to give you an idea of how rare that is in
humans, I just had two rats die from it, and we rat owners don't even
blink twice about catching it from our pets because the odds are so
infinitesimal. Dashew should be back on the scene within a couple of
months; meanwhile, Ginger Leigh and the rest of the band have been
carrying on here and in Europe since January, and will next perform
Saturday at Mother of Pearl's."

I've had it,  my son has had it... you take your meds for either 5
days or the 10 day treatment and then you're fine unless you have other
illnesses making it worse.
It's not rare in humans.
