Well I'm taking Mr Tiddles to the vets tommorow as he has lots of little
marks on his back, i'm presuming it's mites. I have checked the other boys
and they all seem okay other than Mr Chips who has a few on him. I phoned
the vets up yesterday, normal vets not the RSPCA one and orrigionly just
booked in Mr T but then I phoned back because I thought well does the vet
need to see them all if they're living together, the receptionist said yes
he would which would cost me over £100.00 just in the consultation fee
without even the tretment, told receptionist I couldnt afford that so she
told me to qrauretine Mr T and just take him. Poor Mr T

Well, usually if one rat has mites, they all have mites but don't all
show symptoms. If you treat one rat and not the others. Mr Tiddles will
just get it again.
If you get Ivermectin, a horse wormer paste found at feed and farm
stores, you can treat your rats yourself.

I agree with Joanne. Ivermectin is cheap and can be bought from those
feed stores where you buy horse feed, chicken food and those sort of
products. It will get rid of worms as well as external parasites like
mites.

You get ivermectin over the counter so don't need to waste money on a
vet consult. Alternatively ask your vet for some. Here in Australia I
use the ivermectin for sheep (the tradename is Ivomec) which comes in
liquid form. I actually bought about 200mL of it from my vet and this
will last me numerous years and then some. It only cost me $15. I've
decided to use it on my cats aswell, all those worm and flea products
really do add up.

If you decide to go with ivermectin I can tell you what dosage to give
the rats. You may need kitchen scales to weigh them though.

I hate to say it, but your vet seems a bit unreasonable and greedy. I
wonder if the receptionist had it wrong.

Hi I think the receptionist had it a little wrong, when I told the vet that
the receptionist had told me I would be charged for each of them she said
that she would not have charged me for each and every rat.

Hi Thanks for that, it will be useful in the future. The vet was really
helpful actually cause I explained to her that Tiddles was living with
others but I was told that if I brought them all down I would be charged the
consultation fee for each of them and that I couldnt afford it because I am
currently on benefits due to a personal situation not through choice by a
long way. I told her that I had checked them all over and it was Mr Tiddles
having the bad case and Mr Chips having a mild case but the rest of them
being clear. She basically said the same as you but was really nice and gave
me treatment to treat all of them and if I don't notice a difference in a
week or so then i'm to take them back.

That's great, usually vets won't give enough meds for all the rats
especially without seeing them.

I'm thinking she may have taken pity on me, she just asked if the rats were
a similar size to each other and how old they were. She was actually pretty
good.
