In the last two weeks I've lost Ellie and Astro.
It was not a surprise as both had started to show
classic aging signs this summer. Weight loss,
sleeping in an inordinate amount (for them) etc.
Ellie passed on first some time in the night. Then
almost two weeks later Astro her brother moved on
down the road also. Both showed almost the exact
same issues with few exceptions. Neither developed
any major health issues, though astro did have a
benign tumour of the right axillary area.
The last three months both had become
extremely thin if not emaciated no matter what
they were fed or how frequently. A check with the
veterinary showed no detectable problem...just
getting on in years. At least they made their
second birthdays eh?

I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of Ellie and Astro.  To lose two in such a
short space of time must be very hard.  Try and take comfort from the fact
they lived happy lives in a loving home.  Take care.

That is why I waited almost 2 weeks before
posting. It came as no surprise they died so
closely together time wise. They were litter mates
after all. Still it was a good display of genetics
( morbid I know ) as the other two Eb and Natasha
are hale and hearty. Not a sign of age or
infirmity in either of them. Odd in a way as they
are Dumbo Rex and litter mates. Natasha expressed
as a double rex whilst Eb is only a rex. Both are
above average in size, appetite and curiosity.

I'm so sorry...
Reaching their second birthday sometimes is the most we can ask.

Thanks everyone. Just thought I'd share a bit of
it because many here can remember when I got Ellie
and Astro. They were both vital and active to the
end, granted for the last month Astro was dealing
with a prolapsed penis that never seemed to bother
him. Oh and no he had absolutely no lower body
movement issues.

I'm very sorry to hear about Ellie and Astro. At least they passed away
peacefully.

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss.  I lost my girl Riley the
same way: lots of sleeping, a bit of weight loss then she died suddenly
overnight.

One of my rats, Bella, is older and near her end.  I adopted her this
summer and fell in love with her immediately.  Now, we realize her end
is near and we're so sad.  But at least we have been able to spend a
little bit of time with her in her golden years.  Her previous owner
was wonderful and Bella has been leading a good life.  I am cherishing
my days with her as I know they are numbered.  I wish rats lived
longer!!!!!
