Hi Everyone

I wanted to start a post where we could all add our ideas on how to
spoil our rats this Christmas.  Call me crazy, but I've already gotten
their stockings, now I just need ideas on what to put in it.
This is the first Christmas my rats are spending with me and I need
ideas from all of you as to what to put in their stockings.  A new toy,
a new treat...something they've never had before.  Something all rats
love that will be sure to make them feel it is a special day.

My rats love the rattie donuts and yogurt drops you get from the pet
stores.   Last year Riley actually figured out how to unwrap her gifts
and get to her goodies!  Petsmart has these edible rodent houses that I
might get for my girls.  I figure, so long as they can put it in their
mouths, they'll be happy!

How about small christmas puddings or those mince pies. Candy canes. A
little bag of pistachios.

I went crazy one christmas and hand sewed chistmas stocking for the
cats (didn't have rats then, so didn't make any stockings for them).
Neil (my hubby) thought I was crazy when I started wrapping up cans of
tuna for the critters. The cats loved it though, especially the toy
mousies they got and I caught Neil making a sandwich with the tuna.

Nuts in the shell are good to chew and tasty. When I was a kid we
always got nuts in our stockings, and the rats like them too.

Wrapping is entertaining -- I would use plain brown paper rather than
fancy paper, because I'm a bit leery of dyes, but rats do like chewing
things open.

Thanks for the great ideas everyone!  I like the idea of plain brown
wrapping paper...I want to make it fun for them and having to "open"
their gift will stimulate them that much more.  Nuts in their shells
sounds like a great idea...I've never given them yogurt drops before,
so that would be a treat too.  I didn't know they sold edible houses
safe for rats...are you just talking about those plain wooden ones good
for degus and whatnot? or is there a special tasty kind made out of
something flavored?  I tend to skip the toy section at the pet store
because I made most of their playthings from scratch, so I really don't
know what is out there are far as rat toys, etc.  All of these ideas
are fantastic and new to my rats.  They are just so wonderful I want to
make sure I do something special for them.  Thanks again and if anyone
gets even more ideas, let me know :)

One thing I always did for a Christmas treat was to get a few treats, like
yoghurt drops, rodent nibble biscuits, popcorn, whatever you think your
ratties will like and put them together and model a cracker out of plain
paper with the treats inside.  Secure the ends with a little string.  They
are so easy to make and the rats have fun biting through the paper to get to
the treats.  Make sure you make a cracker for each rattie otherwise their
will be arguements!!!

Apparently they have actually houses made of foodstuff.  I guess like
gingerbread houses, only for rats?   I'm hoping once I finish up with
exams etc. i'll be able to spend a little time working on some fun
Christmas things for the rats!

"Squee" our honey colored male, LOVES slices of orange (another common
stocking stuffer) as well as almonds in the shell.

Sounds like they love it!  But I thought I heard citrus fruit wasn't
good for male rats...something about cancer, whereas for females it
wasn't as risky.  Is it alright to give males a slice on a special
occasion?

D-limonene found in orange rind is the culprit, can cause cancer in
males but it's got to be in extremely high doses...so the occasional
orange is not a bad thing and the little buggers sure love it.

Thanks to Miranda and Jo! :)  See?  You guys teach me something every
day!  I'm going to give them a slice at Christmas.  I wanted something
they never have had before and won't have again often so that is
perfect!

:)

i really like the homemade cracker idea.  that way each rat can have
its own little present to open.  good one!

Some friends of mine did some calculations:

The carcass / bones from your festive meat is usually successful.

My lads will probably be having a mixture of turkey, pork and beef from
my Christmas Lunch with some prawns I got from the supermarket.
