A Christmas story

Thursday, Dec 21st, I answer and ad in our local Bargain Hunter. 3 rats
to give away, 1 male and 2 females. Free.
So I find out where they live and what's up with them? Mom says it's her
son's, he's tired of them and she's fed up with the smell. The male is
over 2, closer to 2.5 and the girls are almost 2 if not already. So I
think, ok, I'll give them a good home, there's not much time left to them.
I go to pick them up and find out more to the story. We have a horrible
pet store here in town, keeps his rats in horrible condition and usually
all go for feeders. This kid about 14, decided a couple of years ago
that he would make himself some money. He gets himself a male and 4
females. He breeds them over and over again for 2 years to make his
pocket money. He sells to the horrible pet store. These rats were kept
in tiny hamster cages, no toys, no hammocks... even the food was just
thrown in. The mom asked: what are you going to do with them. ...love
them... she says: oh, what else. I'm just thinking I need to get the
hell out of there.
What kind of parents teach their children such horrible values. Where
are their morals? Animals are not money making ventures, they are
companions, they are sent to us to love them and care for them to the
best of our abilities. I certainly wouldn't want to know this "kid" when
he grows up. What kind of person is he going to turn out to be?
Oh they were fed up with the rats, they weren't bringing in as much
money anymore and the room was starting to stink. Nice.
I'm so sad for these little guys. The rats have been renamed by me
because I certainly couldn't remind them of their past. The male is
Mister, he is a beige mismarked bareback. A beautiful old fella, with
bad lungs and near the end of his life. The girls are nearly two. Flea
is a rex chocolate berk, her sister, Couscous is a black hooded. The
girls have been so over bred, that Flea has an extended belly, her
uterus is outstretched and she now looks like she's pregnant all the
time but she's not. Couscous's nipples are very prominent and may very
well stay that way forever. :(
I've given them big cages, igloos, cubes, hammocks, wheels, toys,
chews... and most of all, lots of love!! The girls are already enjoying
their wheel. They are so smart and so sweet.
The only thing I ask from them is for Mister to stay with me a little
longer... I need to show him that humans are good. Humans love their pets.

I am so happy you were able to rescue them. I never look in the Bargain
Hunter for rats, mostly just the Northern Life cause that's the only
paper I get.  I'm glad they are finally getting a Christmas they
deserve.

Boy this makes me angry! However I'm so glad that these three have
found you and can live a significantly better life now. I do hope
Mister gets to live longer so that he can enjoy himself and
learn to trust you.

Parents who allow their children to breed animals like that for money
are clearly stupid due to their inability to think ahead about the type
of values they are teaching their children. However that boy may
eventually grow up into a decent person, so long as he get's the right
influence from the other people he hangs out with. Such as a girlfriend
(or boyfriend). He may look back in disgust with what he did and what
his mum allowed him to do when he was a youngester.

Well done Jo. You're a great person!

Dewi.

Oh... Merry Christmas!

I so hope you are right, that he will learn to become a better person.
It's hard to see beyond the pain when you're in it. Thank you for
showing me the other side. ;)

Hi Joanne

OMG what nasty people they were but thank god they've found you and will
have a happy ending to their lives. I just think it's horrible that animals
are so abused and nobody seems to really care like the RSPCA etc, they just
do something if it's for the media, on telly etc or the animal is so bad
that it's about to be put to sleep. I'm so glad both me and you have done
something good for some unfortunate pets this christmas.

We all do what we can. :)

Well done on taking these beautiful animals under your wing.

On the plus side at least the previous owners had enough compassion to
place an ad in the paper as opposed to "setting them free".  So don't
count them out completely.

Eight years ago I adopted an elderly male rat under similar
circumstances.  The previous owners were both grossly overweight, and
so was the rat.  He was unable to walk or run; the best he could do
sort of inch-worm himself around.  I put him on a more healthy diet and
brought him back to health for the remaining 6 months of his life.

I never thought of it that way... you are quite right, they could have
easily just let them go for food as well.
It's very gratifying taking in rescues isn't it?

Oh, Joanne, that is such a sad story, but what an ending - to be rescued by
you, those ratties will at last find happiness and contentment!
Unfortunately there are too many people in this world that basically don't
give a sh.t about animals (and indeed their fellow man) and just use and
abuse them, especially if there's money to be made in it.  It breaks my
heart.  I just hope karma will one day creep up on them and bite them on the
butt.

They are such beautiful looking ratties, Jo, and I just want to snuggle them
all up in my arms and tell them you'll be ok now, I know you'll have done
that already :o)  Here's hoping they all live to ripe old ages so they can
see plenty of what it's like to live in a loving home, with human friends
who treat them with the care and respect all animals deserve.

Such gorgeous photos!
And such lucky little rats going to live with the best owner ever!
I can't freakin' believe they had them in a hamster cage!
