a friend of mine who owns three (old) rats has told me that he also owns
hermit crabs. they can live for up to 15 years and there is a whole
community of people who have them as pets. they grow up to the size of a
softball and he swears that they can recognize their owners and have unique
personalities.

it's not for me, but i did find it very interesting to learn.

Hermit crabs aren't for me either but I have seen them at the pet store.
They also like to change shells often, they are social but they will
fight if there are not enough shells to go around. They like to climb
and walk about their habitat and even have food preferences. I guess you
could say they are somewhat cute. ;)

He's a beige broken hooded, could also be considered a mismarked
bareback. He's doing great too. I really didn't think he would have
lasted this long but he's a tough one and so loving and smart too.
When I first put in a litter pan, he wasn't interested in it. In fact he
was very upset with it. When I put my old girl Bijou (34m) to live with
him, she needed her litter pan as she is completely trained. Well,
Mister soon realized what the litter pan was for and is now litter
trained as well. Sweet!

I have heard that they are great pets, I have always been fascinated
with them.  I remember someone on Pet Rats Canada who had them, and
she set them up with hammocks and everything.  Her setup was awesome.
They do require extensive research though, because they can suffer
with problems if they do not have the perfect environment.
I looked them up after seeing the pictures on PRC and found that there
is more to them that meets the eye if you want them to live to their
potential lifespan.
