My hairless buck smells like diarrhea! He doesnt have the runs at all
in fact we just got back from the vets and both my boys are in perfect
health. I asked the vet and he said that it could just very well be
thats his smell. Does anyone else have a buck or a doe that stinks
like diarrhea? He get bathed every saturday by my daughter while I
clean out their cage. My other buck does not smell like this at all. I
dont know if I should be worried or just take the doctors word for
it.

Help?

Does it really smell like diarrhea?  Or does he have a "rotting" smell?  We
had a boy named Bob who always had a bad smell.  Unfortunately it was a
warning sign of an internal illness, the smell of organs shutting down.
Please ask your vet again if it could be an illness.  But, I must admit that
I've never had a hairless, so I'm hoping the smell is something unique to
them.

in the past when any of my rats have seemed "off", i have smelled them very
closely and have always been able to smell death starting on them. it's how
i know that they won't be around much longer. i'm not saying i think your
rat is going to die, lol, don't get me wrong... we had a rat once that
always smelled like urine, even shortly after bath time.

Hairless are notorious for skin infections and keratin cysts which can
abscess and give off a really foul odour. I'd get him on
Novotrimel/Septra/Bactrim for a few weeks see if that helps.
BTW, I don't recommend giving a rat a bath once a week. Each time you do
this, they start producing lots and lots of sebum (buck grease). That
oil on their skin is beneficial to them. I wouldn't give them a bath
more than once a month. :)

Well regarding the Bathing thats good to know, I will mark it on the
calendar that she is to bathe him once a mth. As for the keratin
cysts, I know far too well about those however he doesnt have any at
all. I had a female with one eye and every time we got rid of a
keratin cyst another would pop up a few inches away from the previous
one. Eventually she was PTS due to a brain tumor.

I will try him on a once a mth bath schedule and see if that clears
things up. As for another trip to the vet, we only have two rat
specialists in Winnipeg, one that is pretty far away by bus and
another rather close. Since I insist on the best care for them, I
trust the vet when he says they are in perfect health. My main reason
for going to the vet in the first place is for a check up on their
overall health and because I thought I felt a lump near the spine of
my hairy buck. X-rays for them all since my hairless is the father of
the hairy. At any rate, I will keep you all posted on the situation
with el-stinky.

Thanks again,

Dawn
