Moving

I have some questions about moving, that I havent been able to find
while meandering about on the internet. My husband and I are waiting
to find out the status of our visa's. He applied for a job back in
November and so far it has been a waiting game.

What I want to know is:

If we move to the USA, namely Washington State, if I can take my rats
with me when I go?

Are there any crossing the border issues I should know about?

Has anyone else experienced issues with moving to another country and
customs seizing the animals and having them destroyed?

I love them too much to want to rehome them however, if I cant take
them across the border I want to know now, so I can prepare myself for
it all.

Thanks in advance,

Dawn

I know a person that had a hard time getting into the US with their rats
but in the end they got through. I think you'll need a vet certificate
stating that they are healthy. Also, if you are flying, they will have
to stay in cargo which is not a safe place for ratties. If you are
driving there, that would be better.
You can always find out by calling the US customs.

Hi Dawn,

Contact a pet transport business. They will be able to answer any
questions for you and will be able to organise whatever you need for
your rats. Vets or boarding kennels may be able to recommend some good
ones for you.

I subscribe to another rat group and someone there moved their rats
from Australia to the US. He used a pet transport service in Australia
(http://www.allanimaltransport.com.au/index.htm) who organised the
entire thing. The rats travelled by plane in a temperature controlled,
pressurised container in cargo. They sorted out customs as well. The
guy was very happy with the service.

Another thing, try looking up a US customs or quarantine web site.
They may provide some additional info as well. Seeing as the US
doesn't seem to have all that many quarantine restrictions, with the
right preparation, I don't see why your rats can't move with you.

Best of luck with the move and the job.

Dewi.
