Eye cooties!

A week or so ago I wrote about my friend and her rat with the eye
gunk. Well today I made a visit with the vet for my hairless boy for
the same damn thing.  He told me that what my Joe has is an eye
infection! I washed my flipping hands when I got home from being at my
friends house. I feel sick to my stomach thinking I passed this along
to my boy :(

So now hes on Pentamycetin for 10 days. Anyone ever used this for
their ratties before? Any side effects that I should be aware of? I
asked the vet and he said none that he could think of (this guy isnt
their regular vet)

Thanks in advance,

Dawn

It's an antibiotic related to Chlorpalm. A good strong med for the eyes
and more. I don't think there are any side effects to worry about.
I'd tell your friend to do the same with her little one too.
Sending well wishes to little Joe.

How true Tracey,

Hubby gave up asking how many we had.. he never got a straight answer and he
was sure there was more in the house each time he looked..:))  I did come
clean in the end and he didn't care.:)

Regards Kate.

I lost my last two last year :o( and decided to have a bit of a break after
twelve years of keeping them.  The most I had at once wasn't many - only
four - so my fiance would have noticed had I tried to sneak any in!  I do
miss ratties and will definitely have some more one day, probably when we
get a bigger place and money isn't so tight (the vets bills sure add up!) -
it's a chance for me to have a break from all the upset of keep losing them
too.  It's nice to still come here and read about others' rats, their funny
little antics and go gooey over the pics :o)

Oh I know what you mean. I'm thinking about having a break after my
lot eventually go. Emotionally it's very taxing when they die and get
ill. The vet bills are awfully expensive too. Just to think, that will
be only 2 years from now at the most! I feel guilty about giving rats
a break though, as I do love the little fellas.

Funny you should mention this...a few weeks ago, I adopted a little
male, he was put in a cage on my kitchen counter. (only available space)
I didn't tell hubby. He came home, made himself supper and when I came
back from work I said, hope you aren't mad. He looks at me, baffled,
what for? Um... didn't you see the cage on the counter? Oh... no,never
seen it till you mentioned it. Doh!
But he wasn't upset with it. I think he knows to just play along. LOL

Your rat may not have caught the infection from your friends rat, you
never know. Especially as you washed your hands. I hope both rats
recover well, which I'm sure they will.
