Litter training rats

Hi all,

Since purchasing a new cage with solid plastic shelves in (rather than the
wired levels that my girls' previous cage contained), the little monsters
have taken to pooping and piddling on them instead of using the corner of
their cage like they used to. It got me thinking how much easier it would be
to clean them if I could get them to use a litter tray instead. I have an
idea of how I'm going to go about it, I was just wondering if anyone could
recommend a good, absorbent litter I could use?

Also, on a side note, is aspen still a good thing to use as a cage liner? I
used to use it when I kept rats a few years ago, but I'm sure since then I
read somewhere that it was now a big no-no?

Hi Kat!
Aspen is ok as long as it's not too dusty. For my crew, I don't use a
bottom bedding, I like use fleece or bathmats at the bottom of my cage.
I also have corner litter pans with Yesterday's News in it. It's a great
product, paper base cat litter. (clay (clumping)litter is a no-no)
If you follow the link in my signature you can see some of my cages and
how I have corner litter trays. Most of my rats are pretty good at using
it now.

My rats use litter boxes, too.  In fact, litter training them was the
easist thing I've had to do with them so far.  I was surprised to see
they even grasped it quicker than my cats had as kittens.  Anyway, in
case anyone wonders how I did it, I just put bedding in the corner
litter, and for the next day or two, put their poop raisins in the pan
and soon enough they figured out, oh...ok...we should poo there and
they started using it.  The occasional loose raisin here or there, but
otherwise, all the poop is contained in the litter this way.  I use
Carefresh in my litter.  But there are many options!

Thanks for that :) I've been using Bio-Catolet for bedding but have just
switched to Aspen as my local petshop is giving me a great offer on bulk
orders. I still have some Bio left so I'll probably use that as litter and
see how they get on with it. I'm just off out now to get some litter trays
:) No doubt some new toys and treats will get thrown in too, as they always
seem to hehe.
