Thanks!
In fact a couple of years ago, my brother in law borrowed a bat detector
from his place of work and we were able to listen to our rats and their
vocals/laughter. It was so wonderful to actually "hear" them. :)

Last time I looked into it, the cheapest option was a kit for around 50ukp.

Here are some relevant urls:

http://pw1.netcom.com/~t-rex/BatDetector.html
http://www.econvergence.net/batdet.htm

hth.

If you try this out let us know how you get on.

Thanks too :)

If anyone here tries this I suggest taking the following advice before
buying (from http://www-personal.umich.edu/~bclee/ratdet.html):

I remember when we had the bat detector, we had to try different rooms
so not to have interference. The detector was quiet until we brought in
the rats, we found 45kHz to be the best. We could tell when the rats
were being tickled and the noise they would then make. Also, the rat
would make a noise when climbing on us. But when they stood still on the
bed, there would be no noise.
It certainly was a lot of fun. ;)
