Hi All.  I caught a programme yesterday afternoon about phobias ('Phobia :
Musophobia' - filmed in 2002) and the subject this week was absolutely
terrified of rats.  She couldn't even look at a picture of one without
getting really anxious.  She particularly hated their fur, tails and was
really repulsed by their back feet.  She had steady exposure therapy (her
first steps had been to carry a plastic rat and pet rat book around with
her), met lab rats and rats used for tv and films and by the end of the
programme she was able to hold one and even commented that he was actually
quite cute!  Debbie Ducommun featured in the programme, as did many gorgeous
ratties!   Anyone seen it?

Oh darn, I would have loved to have seen that!
My mom has an extreme fear to snakes. But I don't think she would agree
to the exposure therapy. lol

The mum of one of my friends has a phobia of snakes, she even freaks out at
those little jellied snakes sweets

I'd like to have seen that. What channel was it on? If it was one of the
Freeview channels, it might get repeated - some of the digital terrestrial
channels seem to show programmes on a loop :-)

People have some funny phobias - I have a bad phobia of daddy-long-legs
(craneflies) - I don't even like typing the word, and I can't be in the
same room as one or touch anything that one of them has touched.

Just been looking at the Sky listings because I couldn't remember which
channel I saw it on.  Found it, and when it's on again!  It's on Sky Travel,
Tuesday 1st May 18.30-19.00.

I have a vomit phobia - I panic if I see anyone throwing up, and my worst
nightmare would be for me to be sick in front of somebody.  I can't even
watch people throwing up on tv!  People I know think it's an unusual phobia
but it's in the top ten most common ones!

The strangest phobias I've come across have to be ones like fear of buttons
and baked beans -  I saw a tv programme a few years ago with a psychologist
trying to help a lady who was terrified of buttons and a man who had a
massive fear of baked beans, he couldn't even walk past the tins in the
supermarket!

I used to get Sky Travel on Freeview, but they swapped it for Sky Three.
Darn! Thanks for looking it up, though.

I would have thought it's quite normal to have a phobia of vomit. The
phobia mechanism was probably evolved to make us keep away from dangerous
things no matter what, hence the irrational nature of some phobias, I
suppose - and vomit can be pretty dangerous.

I can imagine that might interfere with your life quite a bit :-) I only
really get bothered by daddy-long-legses in September.

Double damn :/

I'd have really liked to see it too.

Does anyone here ever download tv programmes off Usenet? Only if you do,
this one might turn up there I imagine.

Don't suppose anyone could record it off Sky Travel, preferably onto a
dvd with a pvr/pc or dvd recorder & mail me the disk? I see 'Phobia' is
a 30 minute programme. Transcoded to an avi using xvid that'd probably
only be a 300MB download off alt.binaries.tv on Usenet. Ahem.

Are we talking about Sky Travel 253 / +1 254?
I have the TV Guide / Programme Planner up and it shows X-Weighted
(9/13) 18:00 - 19:00
I'm all confused now.

Ok I've scanned through the day and I have it on at 19:30 - 20:00
Tuesday and 13:30 - 14:00 Wednesday.  Yay, I can watch on Tueday evening
instead of watching Chuck Norris kick butt as Walker Texas Ranger.

How strange.  My Personal planner has the programme booked for 19:30 on
Tuesday.

OOO I have the same one. When I was a kid some kid on the bus threw up
next to me, and then a month later, some other kid threw up over the
seat he was in and on to ours. I'm pretty sure there wasn't any on me,
but I can NOT stand the sight, smell, or SOUNDS of a person vomiting,
or somebody who either has vomited, or may possibly vomit.

I won't watch TV or movies if it may contain vomiting.

I've been working to get over it, since I'm pregnant I'll have to deal
with a vomiting kid at some point. I was at a party and somebody drank
to much and started throwing up... I didn't watch it, but it didn't
give me that overwhelming sense of "the world is going to end. they're
going to die, i'm going to die..." and whatever other feelings occur.

It makes my heart beat faster, and for some reason I can't picture
anything else other than that person vomiting for like a week... i
just keep getting horrible flashes of it.

I also have a HORRIBLE FEAR of cotton. I can NOT touch a cotton ball,
and even THINKING about a cotton ball sends the same chills up my
spine that nails on a chalkboard would. I do not like the texture, and
I do not like the sound that they make... or the frequency they
vibrate at when touched. I LOATHE buying a bottle of medicine for fear
that it may contain a cotton ball.

I don't mind cotton shirts or qtips (but only wet, I don't like
touching them dry).

i wasn't aware that phobias could be overcome through therapy. but i guess
it makes sense when you think about it. i'd like to see the episode where
they deal with scorpions.

Oh yes, therapy can be very successful in the treatment of phobias.  Things
like cognitive therapy, exposure therapy and hypnotherapy can all help.
