Mycoplasma pulmonis

Both my ratties came with mycoplasmosis.  Slipper passed away last night and
Dipper is looking well.  I've treated them both through sick bouts with
Bayatril.  My question is about getting 2 new little buddies for Dipper to
hang with.  I understand that many pet rats have this disease, but I never
had it with my first 4 ratties.  I'm thinking that I shouldn't get any new
ones until Dipper has passed, so that the new ones don't get it from him.
I'm having trouble finding healthy rats in the Seattle/Tacoma area.  I've
gotten them with lice and mites as well.  Thoughts?

               Thanks,

My understanding is that all pet rats will have that at various levels, some
will never show symptoms, others will need treatments.

I got 2 babies from a pet shop recently, they looked healthy there but
quickly developped the symptoms after a few days, I thought they would die,
but I treated them with "Tylan" and it worked GREAT (even though some people
here were not convinced about using this stuff). if your rat is 2.5 years
old probably you should wait because he will die soon, otherwise, I think
you can get new ones and hope for the best.

I would wait, because it has recently been observed in my area (New
York City) that Mycoplasma pulmonis positive serological results are
being seen less frequently. There were always occasional negatives,
meaning that there have always been some rats without Mycoplasma.
Other pathogens can cause CRD (chronic respiratory disease), as well
as Mycoplasma. If you wait, you do not risk giving the newcomers an
illness they might otherwise not get.

i agree. wait. i purged it from my rats by letting those that had it die
off. that was ages ago and i have not had a problem since. it came into the
group from a petshop rat that was without a doubt the worst rat i have ever
owned. horrible personality and sick.

This is very interesting Raquel. Do you have the information on hand?
(paper,journal...)
I've spoken to my vet about this and she has read about the serology for
testing for myco and it appears that unless the myco is active, it comes
back as negative which does not mean the rat doesn't have it.
Almost all rats have myco although not active myco. Myco sets off
secondary infections and it is those secondary infections that kills.
When treating sick rats with URI, you are not treating the myco, you are
treating the secondary infections which in most cases is pneumonia.

Although waiting is the "safest" way to go, I don't necessarily agree
with it. All rats have myco and any stress can bring on the symptoms.
So even if you wait, it doesn't guarantee the new little guys won't have
it.
Finding healthy rats is becoming impossible. Everybody and their brother
seem to be breeding rats, this is a problem because people really aren't
working on health but more on the looks of the rat. This is why I only
adopt from rescues now. Either way, (breeders/petstores or rescues) I'm
going to end up paying vet bills on rats so I might as well rescue them.
Good luck!

Did you have any trouble introducing your rabbits to each other?

Dewi

Its wasn't too bad. Both Bob and Sarah have the whole house to play in and
Bob is pretty much a laid back bunny.  I think being neutered might make
some difference too..:)  Bob does like to chase her but its just a game to
him and if she stops he has no idea what to do next..LOL. Bob was lonely so
he is enjoying the company.

Such cuties!  I bet Bob is so happy with his new friend!  Was it a smooth
introduction?

Had a wee look at your Morning Walk shots, that place is so beautiful!  Is
it near to where you live?  New Zealand looks such a stunning country I'd
love to visit one day.  My step-mum has just come back from there and she
said it's one of the loveliest places she's ever been too, and she's been
all over the world!

Hi Tracey,

That walk starts at the bottom of our driveway..:) I turn left and just keep
walking, eventually I will end up at the bottom of our driveway again.  Its
a full circut.
We tend to take it all for granted, but I know I live in a beautiful
place..:)

It has only been a week but its gone pretty good.  It is going to take a
while but they don't fight and seem to be respectful of each others space.
Sarah has always been a bun who was in an outside run on her own so it has
been a big upheaval for her.  She probably thinks the land of "lounge suite"
is a great place to live..LOL She has no fear of people or cats too which is
amazing.

Oh wow!! She's gorgeous!! How sweet are those two together? Just
gorgeous, with time, they will form such a strong bond. I must say
though... that pic of Bob looking out the window... is priceless.
Thanks so much for sharing those pics Kate!!

with his big floppy ears hanging down his back...LOL.  Such a laid back
bundle of cuteness..:))

I agree with Joanne on this too as all rats have myco. Considering
this, there is no point waiting, IMO.

Most of my rats have had respiratory problems due to myco but I have
always been able to manage it with antibiotics and reducing
environmental factors that can aggravate this condition. You mainly
need to give the correct antibiotics as soon as symptoms start and
give the antibiotics for a sufficient length of time. For example, my
rat Chutney has been on antibiotics for myco for about 6 weeks now and
has another 2 weeks to go.

I think if you have rats & you want to care for them well, you have to
be prepared for a lot of vet bills.

Dewi :)
