Hey everyone,

Well as some of you know I found homes for my ratz and we moved down
the to the usa. I managed to find a lady who had an accidental litter
of baby ratberts. I agreed to take her only two boys off her hands. I
thought she would have socialized her litter but as it turns out she
didn't at all. We have had the two boys here for about a day now and
named them Blank & Jones. Both are hooded and are grey. I have to
honestly say I have never had any grey rats before. Their mother was a
PEW and the father is unknown (mom was a pet store rat). I haven't
found any grey rats on the internet so maybe they are called another
color? They have a vet appointment on Tuesday to get checked out for
the basics. Anyway, Blank is a grey hood and a white under belly while
Jones is also a grey hood he has one dot on his belly and one of his
fuzzy nads.

On top of them being so cute like I have already mentioned, we were
wondering how to socialize them. Blank is very skittish and poo's a
lot when being held and picked up. Any suggestions to make him feel
safe and whatnot? Jones is very inquisitive and doesn't mind being
picked up, doesn't poo on us like Blank does so I think socializing
him will be easy. However, ANY suggestions to make their transition a
better one, I am all for it.

SO far all I have done is tossed in one of my old shirts so they get
used to my smell, since my husband wants to hold them as well, should
I put one of his shirts in there as well or is that scent overload?

Also its great to be back, I hope to post some pictures soon (soon
meaning as soon as I find my data cable that connects my camera to the
computer)

how old are they?
if he is over a couple months old, he might always be nervous. if under a
couple months, just keep doing what you are doing. handle him lots and make
noise when you're around him. he should grow out of it.
there are exceptions of course. some older rats can learn to relax and some
younger ones will be scared for life. as the rat group here knows, those
little guys can be quite different in how they deal with things.

It's good to hear that you are happily settled with your new rats.
Have you heard anything about the rats you had to re-home?

Although I've not done this myself, many people socialise their rats
by popping them under their shirt and letting them scurry there for a
while. You'd have to wear 2 shirts for this and will probably need a
shower afterwards. I have 2 rats to socialise at the moment and I'm
going to try this method for a change. They're young but are very
skittish and sometimes nip if you move your hand too quickly.

One thing I do with my new rats, young or old, I will grab them out of
the cage and put them down my shirt for a couple of hours at a time and
several times a day. This has worked each and every time. It creates a
strong bond because the rats will associate your smell to a cozy comfy
place.
CongRATS on the new guys!

It seems Blank whos the shyest of the two has issues with being picked
up. He doesnt scratch but he does pee and he poo'd 6times before being
put back in his cage. Jones seems to have litter trained himself, he
wont do his business unless hes in the litter box. Blank just backs
his a.s up and does his thang anywhere he wants. Any suggestions?
