Well this week was an interesting one to say the very least. I took my
boys to the vet for a once over basically. Got lost on the way and
also kicked off the bus even though they were in a pet carrier as
specified by the local metro offices. Anyway, I strolled into Denny's
Pet World hoping they would have the vets # as I lost it. As I waited
for the owner to look it up in the back room, I decided to wander
around the store a bit. This store is a lot closer than Petco is to us
and I figured I could pick up the boys food and toys from here
instead. I found lots of goodies, yay! However I found their rodent
section as well!

Wow, is all I have to say! I am very disappointed with what I saw.
They had to huge bucks in an itty bitty aquarium, looked like a
10gallon! On a sign stuck to the glass it says "baby rats, 9.99". What
the H3ll baby rats. The owner came over and said "Oh would you like to
buy these baby rats?" I told her no, that those are by far not baby
rats! She told me they were dumbo's! like h3ll they are. They were the
size of my hairless buck I had back in Winnipeg. She told me I could
buy them and take em home for my boys to play with. They were huge
compared to my babies who are really babies not a cartoon world
version of what she is telling me. At any rate, once I got to the
vets, I talked to the vet tech and told her what happened. She was
very upset so she went down and ended up taking all the rats home. The
does and the bucks. YAY for her!  I am still floored that this broad
was trying to sell me full grown bucks as babies! I may be Canadian
but I am not dumb! (really Im not!)

Anyway that was my adventure to the vets! (oh yea, I forgot to
mention, the vet came and picked me up since I was lost, isnt that the
sweetest thing?)

Well, in my experience when people say they've seen a wild rat they often
follow it with the statement "and it was THIS BIG!" - holding their hands
out to something about the size of a large cat. So if people think that's
what the adults look like, I can imagine unknowing customers could be
persuaded that those monster bucks were babies :-)

My local garden centre/pet shop does have some baby dumbos, does and bucks,
but they're only about 4 or 5 weeks old, and I don't think they're willing
to sell them till 6 weeks (though they're already separated). It would have
taken some real willpower to walk out of there empty-handed, if they hadn't
still been too young for sale. It's a good technique, I think - separating
at four weeks then giving them two weeks where they get used to the ambient
noise in the shop (not too loud, thankfully) and people coming up to the
cage and saying hello - and it also means customers have two whole
tantalising weeks to be tempted by these babies before they can buy them -
and also maybe to think about whether buying a pet rat is a responsible
thing to do.

I should think when they're old enough to sell they'll all be sold
extremely quickly, though - they're lovely, healthy-looking, lively and
pretty-coloured rats.

Sorry you had such a hard time, you ought to write a letter of complaint to
the bus company!

It sounds like your vet's a star - hope you can hang on to her!

I've encountered some pretty stupid store clerks too. The one that takes
the cake was in North Bay in Northern Ontario. They had a sign up, Blue
Dumbos. I asked them where are the blue dumbos... the clerk tells me,
blue means they are all one colour and dumbo means they have curly fur.
I told them they were wrong and told them what it means and he said
will that's not what our manager told us. LOL ah yes, cause managers
know everything.
I walked out laughing...

i once saw at petsmart or petcetera a cage full of rats for sale. right next
to it they had a cage full of rats marked "fancy rats". the price was double
and the rats looked no different except that they were differently colored
than the "regular" rats.
