Question on introducing rats.

I'd like to introduce my rat babies to their uncle Ren. I've place
they're cages together so Ren and the babies are familiar with each
other. However, as the babies are half the size of Ren, is it too
early to make an introduction? The babes will be 6 weeks on Saturday
(males and females have already been separated BTW) and Ren is about 5
months old.

If Ren is known to be a very laid back rat, you can try the intro right
away but if he's known to show some territorial issues like rubbing his
side on things, digging motion, lots of side scratching... then I'd
advise you to wait till the babies are at least 2 months old. But keep
them side by side.

Ren is very laid back although very playful. He stares at them all
keen for a game. So I'll introduce them on Friday.

Thanks.

Well the intro went okay I guess. I introduced Ren to the male babies
as I figure these would be the most difficult. After a while Ren
started getting bossy and dominant, pinning the babies down and biting
some of them without breaking their skin. So I'm going to do short
intros (5 to 10 mins) every second day until he is no longer
threatened.

What do you think? Maybe it would be better to wait until the babies
are bigger but keep their cages really close together.

Was he biting while pinning down or is it a type of dragging biting? Do
you know what I mean? Some rats will kind of bite but more to drag them
toward them, moms do that a lot. Some males will do that too but it's
more paternal/maternal than anything else.
Every day intros would be best, keep them short if you are nervous.
Waiting till they are 3 months old is also a good idea, whatever you are
comfortable with. :)

It was a dragging biting. The short intros are working so far and I'll
play things by ear and slowly extend their time together. I hope Ren
doesn't get too jealous of the other guys as he's become a bit of a
mama's boy. Or maybe it'll be me who gets jealous. ;)  He's such a
funny little guy, I'm so glad I got him.

A dragging biting is not a bad thing. I'm glad the intros are working.
lol... I agree, it'll be you that will miss the special attention, but
don't worry, you will still get it!!
