It's Lice!

Our baby boys have lice. Unfortunately, they had no buggies on them,
only nits- so the vet couldn't tell if they are biting or sucking,
which require different treatments.

Jack doesn't have a cold!! thank the heavens.

The vet seemed very nice and rat friendly- although Rocky, my shy
gentle boy, wouldn't even let her hold him. He squirmed like an eel!!
While Jack took it all in stride. Even when she plucked out a couple
hairs to look under the scope!

I don't have much time to post right now- but I will let you know how
it turns out.

I know neither are nice but out of the two (mites and lice) lice are not as
bad since they are species specific, so no worries about them effecting any
other pets or you humans!  Aswell as treating your rats don't forget to
throughly disinfect all their toys, bedding cage etc for several weeks to
make sure all those nasty critters have been zapped.  Glad you could get the
price of the vet's visit down and that Jack doesn't have a cold.  Oh and I
had a look at your pics and your little ones are just gorgeous!

Aren't they just adorable! I have a new issue though. The vet
yesturday gave me a slip of paper with "5% carbaryl powder" to get for
the babies, but I cannot find it Anywhere!! does anyone know where I
can buy it?

I have put the bedding in the freezer so that it will be ok when I
treat them. Should I toss out their wooden house- or spray it with a
light bleach solution, rinse well, and leave it out for a couple
weeks?

I don't know.  Could you try online vet drug sites, or Googling to try and
find out possible local suppliers?  If not I'd get back to your vet and say
you are having trouble sourcing it.

I should think spraying the wooden house, rinsing well and leaving out until
your little ones are bug free would be fine.  In the meantime small
cardboard boxes or tissue boxes lined with torn tissues/loo paper for
bedding (that's what I used) could be used as houses and hidey holes.  The
ratties will have extra fun chewing the cardboard too!

I haven't treated them with the powder yet, but I sprayed the house
with a light bleach solution, let it dry and stuck it in the freezer
(my freezer is becoming more rat products than food!!) I figured if it
will kill the buggies in the Carefresh than it probably will work on
the house too.

I stuck in a Pop Tart box w/ a hole cut in it, stuffed with fabric
strips. Rocky immediately went to work pulling out all the strips and
bringing them into his plastic igloo! He is so funny!

I went online to find some ideas for cheap throw away rattie toys- so
I tried putting in a pinata (idea from the dapper rat). I filled it
with their favorite treats and hung it up. They looked dumbfounded-
sniffed and took off running- So I ripped a tiny hole so they would
know what to do- and now they love 'em. Of course, much better than
the Nylabone I paid five bucks for!

Oh yes, I bet they loved the pinata!  Do you have charity shops or one
dollar stores where you are?  (Over here in UK we have loads of charity
shops and most large shopping centres have a pound store where eveything
inside is a just a pound or less) - have a root through the children's toys
and see if they are any suitable for rattie playtime.

Other ideas are to string cherrios up in their cage so that they have to
climb and work for their tasty treat and try popping a hard boiled egg in
(shell still on) and watch the ratties play with that!  Every now and again
it's good to give them a nut in it's shell, like walnuts or brazil nuts, and
watch them try and get into that!  You probably already know this but, don't
feed nuts too often as they are high in protein (and fat), and can cause
skin problems.  The odd ones now and again as a treat are fine.

We have a lot of dollar shops around and a few thrift (charity) shops,
too. I have never given a rat a hard boiled egg- that must be very
funny to watch. I had *almost* forgotten how much fun babies are to
watch! I hear my husband calling me from bed at night saying, "What
have you been doing in the bathroom for the last hour?" We got Dandy,
my OS's rat who passed, by herself- and she was our only rat since we
were married- so he had no idea how fun rats are when they play
together.

I haven't given the boys a nut in the shell yet, but neither of them
would eat the walnut or almond I tried to give them as a treat. They
don't like yogies either. I gave them a lil' dish of mashed boiled
sweet potato once- I found it the next morning upside down buried
under their bedding!

I made brown rice, mixed it with a tiny bit of sauteed ground beef and
homemade beef gravy, divided it into ice cube trays and give those
frozen as a treat twice a week. They love 'em! And because they are
homemade I know there isn't added salt or sugar in them. My husband
has Celiac Disease (gluten intolerant) so I have lots of different
flours and make a lot of foods myself so it's no extra trouble to whip
up rattie treats.

I will check out the thrift shops and dollar stores today. It sounds
like a great idea. I don't want to spend much on toys or things until
they are lice free.
