Does anyone know where I can get Carbaryl powder? It's also listed as
Ortho Sevin Carbaryl powder. It's what the vet told me to use for the
lice, but I can't find it anywhere near me.

Lynn beat me to it...

Wanted to see if you were in the states. Sevin at a gardening or hardware
store... or in a flea powder for animals that groom themselves.  Sevin works
for rabbits, too.

I did a little "googling" and found that it is in Dusting Powder for pet
birds etc...
Carbaryl powder (found in Zodiac Flea & Tick Powder for cats and dogs ages
12 weeks and older)

perhaps if you looked for that product???
Good luck,
Lynn
PS, your new boys are the BEST, loved the pics!

Thanks Lynn. I found Sevin powder (Carbaryl 5%) this morning in the
GARDENING section of Agway (a feed type store). Apparently, it is also
used to treat garden pests. The bag says that is for use on cats and
dogs- but I'm wary of putting gardening powder on my babies :(

I looked for the Zodiac powder at all our local pet shops, but to no
avail. I am going to call the vet to make sure that the garden powder
is the same thing she was talking about. I guess active ingredients
are active ingredients- even if they are packaged differently.

Lynn, what kind of Zodiac powder did you find that has carbaryl? I
can't seem to find a product listing for it.
Thanks!

I found it online! Zodiac Fleatrol Flea & Tick powder for dogs and
cats!! Thanks! I feel much better (for some reason) putting that on
the babies than some gardening pesticide dust.
Lynn "kitty" - 22 Jun 2007 02:46 GMT
Sorry I was not home earlier to help you find it. I am SO glad that you
found it though. Fantastic. Had my own bout of lice here earlier in the
year. Believe it or not, your trouble helped me out for what to do IF it
ever happens again.

HUGS and good luck, so glad you are here with us,
Lynn

Thanks everyone for all your help. It's nice to be here! Granted there
are many more people now civil to rats than there were 20 years ago,
but true rattie friends are still far and few between. It's great
being able to say, "Look how adorable our new babies are!" without
"Eck!" as the typical response. Or even the lady that acts like you
have a man-eating tiger on your shoulder (rather than a 1/2 lb rat)
and runs across the street screaming.

My cousin, who *acts* so threatened and disgusted when I have a rat
with me, I believe, does it just to be different than the rest of my
family- or because she thinks it makes her look cute or something. As
an intelligent woman, she can't be so ignorant as to think they
honestly pose a threat to her- and she doesn't react so strongly as to
imply a true phobia. I think she felt a little stupid though when my
5yr.old walked in, took Jack out of his pouch and kissed him square on
the nose- Jack just twitched his whiskers, put his hands on Phee's
lips, and sniffed his nose.

We brought the babies to my OS classroom (5th grade) last week for
*show and tell* and even the two little girls who said, "EWW- I'm not
touching no rat! They're gross!", were saying how cute they were at
the end of the 15 mins. Another girl, who seemed genuinely interested
and affectionate to the babies, had her mother call me after school to
find out where we got Rocky and Jack because they wanted to get one.
(She reassured me that they would bring 2 home by the end of the
conversation.) I noticed that the teacher, although she seemed eager
for us to visit, walked well out of range while my son and I walked
the babies around to different students.

Anyway, it's nice to be here amongst like minded people. I'm glad I
found you.

I just found out that Zodiac flea powder with carbaryl has been
discontinued- that's why I was unable to find it in the stores. When I
clicked on the links I found when I googled it, all the online stores
said *out of stock*- so if you or anyone happens upon an online place
that has it, please let me know. Soon I'll be forced to use the
gardening stuff. :(
Thanks

Hope they can help. IT would be great if you have a PETSMART store nearby.
Then perhaps you could go in person for help.

TBH I'd never use a powder on my lads, I'd be scared to death of them
injesting it when they groom.

In Canada, Carbaryl 5% for pets is manufactured by Zodiac. But it's also
 used as a pesticide. *gulp*
Personally, I wouldn't use a powder on the rats. :(
