Has anyone else had a problem with their rat sneezing. I dont see any red
stuff coming out of his nose, but I am worried considering how fast the other
one went. I read somewhere that they usually sneeze for the first few days
when they come to a new home, and its only been 24 hours. Any advice would
be greatly appreciated.
UPDATE:
I thought he might be allergic to the bedding he was in so, I went out and
bought a different type of bedding (CritterCare). When I cleaned out the
Pine/Cedar mix I had bought before from his cage, I realized this stuff is
crazy dusty. I couldnt believe the amount of dust left. The new stuff is
much better, and actually does absorb the smell too! Today I bought another
rat to be friends with my Scooter, and Simon had the same problem with
sneezing until I got him here and they both played in their new bedding. Now
they arent sneezing anywhere near as much, and really its only when they are
scared. I am loving my little babies, and totally recommend CritterCare,
though it is a bit more expensive.

Some bedding can be real irritating. I'm glad they are both no longer
sneezing. Sometimes when they sneeze it can be quite a process in trying
to figure out what could be causing it.
Yay for the boys!!

Ohhh, pine/cedar mix - very bad. It's not just the dust that's a problem.
The reason cedar is used to line closets is because the oils are toxic and
repel bugs. Pine is the same to some extent. It is suggested that pine and
cedar cause respiratory problems in rats. Most serious rat keepers
recommend staying away from the stuff, and most serious pet stores sell
dried aspen as a substitute.
Personally, we use CareFresh (same as CritterCare) with shredded paper to
double the volume. I'm experimenting with my girls and have mixed in dirt
from the lawn. So far it seems to keep the odor down well and give them
lots of fun playing with it.
