morning after pill?

I hate to say it, but Tyche went and visited her brothers. I'd heard
funny little squeaks and assumed (wrongly I now know) that the young
ones were wrestling. It now appears that Tyche was doing other things.
I checked and there is evidence of sexual activity.

Is it too late to hope that she didn't get pregnant? at 8 weeks? Is
there something one can do for times like this? I know she is supposed
to be too young for desexing...but well...

I have read that the females take an active part in the mating
process, but I never expected a girl to go looking for it.

What about the genetic aspect? I am assuming that Tyches mom got
pregnant to her brother as well (Dunca the 'male' pet shop rat) - now
I may have a second generation of inbreeding. If she is pregnant will
the babies have two heads, five legs or something?

Gawd...what can I say?

I think I would be mostly worried about her age and delivering safely.
Unfortunately, there are no morning after pill for rats. :P
You could rush her to a vet for an emergency spay. If you have a good
rat savvy vet, the risks are quite minimal.
Both females and males can start "looking for it" at 5 weeks.
If she wasn't in with the boys that long, then chances are nothing
happened. But if it did, inbreeding is not the evil we were taught it
was. lol It is very uncommon for rats to be born with double anything or
lacking parts. In fact some breeders will inbreed to weed out the bad
traits or to express the good traits.
One way to know if she did get pregnant, check her in 4 to 5 days, if
she goes into heat, she didn't get pregnant.
The problems that could arise from a young mother, smaller litter,
possibly larger babies due to smaller litters and they could get stuck
in the canal. Mommy not knowing how to care for her young. Miscarriage
leading to blood loss. But... I've seen younger rats give birth with no
problems.
Good luck!

If I had realised that her jumpiness and odd behavior was being in
heat......arrrrrrgh...cats I know about..rats in heat...nup..never
seen it. Momma rat was already pregnant when I met her...I just
thought she was jumpy coz I hadn't been spending enough time with
her...or she didn't like the cat/Barkley smell on me.

*beats head against a brick wall* After all that caution at 4.5 weeks
to avoid this, a horny teenager defeats me.....

On another note, I weighed the bab..er teenagers yesterday and the
boys have reached 200 - 250 gms er...8.5 - 10oz (?)Which makes Apollo
heavier than his mum was three weeks ago. The girls are mostly still
an ounce and a half lighter.

cheers,

Hey have a hot chocolate. Have children? Daughters? 8^) SONS... Yeah, something
we parents of hairless apes worry about as soon as they turn 10-12 years old.
<shudder> It happens, happened when my son kept mice. Traveling salesman some
how got the girls...cute babies though.

AH! Is there anyone there who can spey her? Talk to your vet, maybe
they can give her something like RU486 (the abortion drug), it's legal
here now. You could be a grandma soon.

The problem is now out of my hands. The owner of the momma rat called
the pet shop who said they would take the girls (and the boy mice),
and I took all the girls in (including the two that had been next
door..not gonna get into *that*) I took Tyche along as well, coz I
didn't feel right about taking her four sisters away from her. Told
the pet shop there were five in the box, one possibly being pregnant.
Explained the circumstances and said they can either take her or not,
it was no hassle for me to keep her due to her mom being a pregnant
male and all the stuff I had to provide, blah blah blah. They dithered
a bit but eventually took her too.

I'm trying not to feel guilty and go on the fact that the neighbour is
the one that initiated the pet shop contact. It was a wrench though.
So tempted to go and check on them, but afraid of what I will find.

*begs* don't hate me!!!

Can't you buy them from the pet store?
What's wrong with you bloody neighbour, she's just so rude.

Yeah, well. I wish I could, but at 12.50 each, thats a lot of money
which needs to be for the mansion I get on Friday.

The neighbour, well I guess she was feeling pressured by her fella
(who probably doesn't realise momma rat is/may be pregnant..again).
The girls the neighbour had there -which came back coz her fella
wouldn't have three rats at the new place - were so small compared to
the rest, jumpy and bitey.

I hope the boys can stay here. I am 99% sure the neighbour is not
going to want to push her fella too much more by trying to house these
ones. There have been a lot of issues next door, the RSPCA and a
mauled chook not even two weeks ago, other dogs killing sheep and
being put down....so yeah...They are now half moved, and spending most
of thier time in the new place with no animals next door.

:(

So how many rats and mice were sent off to the pet store. It is a real
pity. I guess they had dogs that mauled the chicken and the sheep.

Five girl rats and five boy mice. The rest are still here, six girl
mice, three boys, yes separated - and the five boy rats...one of which
is trying to drink my coffee.

They did indeed have these dogs. The chook maulers are *new*
puppies....yeah, you can imagine how much faith I have in thier
ah....animal protection instincts. :s

cheers

yeah, it's not good. do some research. experiments have been done on
inbreeding with rats. i'm sure it's out there on the web somewhere. just
make sure that the next batch of kittens are not ever allowed to breed (even
with nonfamily rats). some people believe that inbreeding of captive rats in
the past is one of the reasons that today's pet rats are so prone to cancer.
