As I posted here before, but knowing that there is a good chance you
don't remember, I have two albino rats named Fin and Munch for little
over a year now. They are wonderful---their personalities are totally
different and at the same time they usually get along. Fin is the
adventurous one, who pretty much has too much pride in his bravery.
When he's out of the cage he is usually trying to escape by climbing.
Munch, however, is shy and timid. He'd rather cling to your shoulder,
and stay there for hours. He easily gets freaked-out. (Which I don't
know why. He has no problem with me in general. He hates being picked-
up. But he has no problems with crawling all over me.)
About two days ago I noticed a scab on Fin, but it seems to be fine.
He doesn't pick at it, so there's a good chance it's healing right
now. But I am keeping a close eye on it, just in case it's not a scab
or it breaks open. Besides that, he's active.
There was a fight today---over what? I have no clue. After getting
them to break up, Munch was pretty shaken up. After a few minutes I
went to pet him, and he basically jumped. I was noticing that he was
limping slightly, not knowing it was from the fight, anxiety, or
whatever. Looking closer I noticed a bump on his foot. The first
thought? Bumblefoot.
I know it's caused by wires, but it's never happen before. The cage is
medium size with thick-sized purple bars. The bottom, however, is gray
and solid. Mostly every time I do cover the bars up they end up
tearing it apart. Unless putting something hard, but not rough, would
be a good idea. (My rats like to tear up things---if it's soft, they
are after it. Left Mr. Smiley (a soft, red ball) near them, I come
back, and he's all over the place. Hence when I let them out, I keep
important things out of their reach.)
Would it be safe to call a vet? A general check-up would be a good
thing to them. As much as I hate this, but when I got them they were
overweight. What happen is one of my teachers got them for her
children, but she ended up being the one to take care of them. I
offered to take them after she asked the class. Usually any treats I
give they are apples, carrots, bananas, cheerios, and so forth. Of
course, my mom has this nasty habit of giving them yogurt-based treats
when I'm not home. (And those are usually give rarely, for obvious
reasons.)
They are fine now---content. Sleeping on the bottom, curled up next to
each other. I compared them to brothers----they fight, but at the end
of the day they love each other.
And on the vet? I'm hoping they deal with small animals, such as
rodents, or could recommend me to one.

I would say that if he is still acting like he is hurt then take him into the
vet. If its cleared up and he seems okay then I wouldnt worry, but I
definatly dont know everything about rats. I say keep an eye on them and if
it gets bad or worse then go in. You might also want to keep them seperated
for a bit if they start fighting when they wake up. Sometimes they need a
bit of space.

As far as the wire on the bottom of the cage.... I use vinyl flooring tiles
to line the bottoms of rat, ferret and guinea pig cages... they are
inexpensive, easy to clean and protected little feet from injury. You can
buy a box of them and keep the extras at hand for when you need to replace
any chewed bits.

Bumblefoot, if indeed that's what it is, isn't neccesarily caused by
wires. It can be caused by other things. If there is any swelling,
redness, and/or pus I would bring him to the vet. Call around to find
one who will take exotics. If you can afford it, a general check up is
a good idea, even if the bump turns out to be nothing.
A lot of people use vinyl self-stick tiles to cover wire floors (I
hate the smell) Others use that clear plastic carpet protector that
comes off a roll in some hardware stores. I use the fabric-topped
shelf liner stuff- used to prevent slippage, etc. I like the fabric
topped because it's stiff, but can be washed- and isn't slippery like
other things. It is a good idea to keep it covered though.

Hi!
Wires aren't the culprit for bumblefoot. But covering with something
thick and soft will help treat the sores. If it's really bad, then I
would get him on meds but if it's just a small reddish bump, then I
would leave it alone for now.
Boys will get at each other for fun, for dominance and such but I
wouldn't be worried about that either.
As for the scab, it could mites. Mites will also make the rats act out
of character (fighting)
Keep an eye on how much they scratch and if anymore scabs show up, I'd
get them treated for mites.
Where are you located?

Sent an invidual e-mail to you---by mistake, actually. It might of
went through. *shrugs* I aplogise for my mistake.
To say the truth, I am doubting the fact that either of my rats have
mites. Just for the fact that I or anyone else has seen the rats
scatch themselves excessively, a symptom that you mentioned in your
reply/post. There is only one scab, which is located on Fin's side.
What I am worried is that it will break open, and get despite the fact
that I usually keep everything clean and tidy.
My rats rarely fight----rarely. That's the key word. When they do
fight it's almost like Kanagroo boxing. Seriously, it's just...odd.
Usually they stop at the sound of my voice, or when I tap my fingers
against the cage.

How big is the scab?
If you rarely see them scratching and the fighting it just the
occasional tiff, then perhaps mites may not be a problem either. Which
is a really good thing cause you'd have lots of scrubbing to do.
