To go or not to go...

jennjenn84 - 16 Aug 2007 05:02 GMT I was wondering your guys' opinion on this whole vet thing. I currently have three other friends (who live near me) that have rats, and they all take care of their pets differently, which is causing me some greif/concern. Here are the current points of view that my friends have.
Friend 1 does not take her pets to the vets. Her rat, Moe, has Cedar bedding, no toys, has one little hut that he doesnt fit in, and lives alone.
Friend 2 does not take his pets to the vet. His rats (he has 2) sleep in appropriate bedding and has toys and other chew items.
Friend 3 takes her pets to the vet on a extreemly consistant basis. She will take them to the vet for anything that seems off (and the vet seems to just give the rat the same meds no matter what my friend thinks is wrong). The rat lives a great life, and has a whole room to live in, but no rat friends.
Me: I take my rats to the vet when I notice that something has changed and it starts to worry me (nose and eyes red, excessive sneezing when nothing has changed enviroment wise, sleeping too much, so on). They have a nice three story house to live in and have different types of food to eat (fresh veggies, baby food, mixed rat food, lab blocks and sometimes other treats such as crackers, peanuts, yogurt), lots of toys (balls with bells in them, tubes to crawl through) chew sticks both hanging and in the cage. They have three huts so that they have different homes to sleep in and a hammoc to sleep in when they choose to. Most of my friends wish that they lived the life of my rats.
Here is the problem. As mean as it sounds I am tired of stressing out about my rats. A big part of me wishes i could have the attitude that friend 1 has where she doesnt stress. Now, I would not change a lot of the things I do with my rats such as buying them lots of special healthy treats and special toys. I just wish I didnt worry so much about every little thing. As mean as this sounds, she doesnt know much about rats... she doesnt know that cedar is terrible for them (though he smells amazing because of it)... she doesnt know anything about the red noses or anything. And its not because she doesnt care, its just that i am so much of a freak about researching, and in a way, its because I have become such good friends with all of you... but its the same burden that a doctor has when they have children, they have the burden of knowing things that can happen. When I got rats I had no money problems, but now I cant afford to take them to the vet, which makes me feel like a terrible owner. I love them to peices, and I want the best for them, I hope you all know that, but I dont know where to draw the line.
Okay, so I kinda ranted there, but I needed to get it off my chest... I guess what I am wanting to know from you guys is where do you draw the line? What is the point where you say, okay I need to go to the vet, and what is the point where you play the wait and see game?
Also, I have one other series of questions for you. I live in Missouri, USA.. . which has been under a massive heat warning (near 105 degrees before the heat index). My apartment has been at a constant 74-77 degrees. But I have noticed a huge difference in my boys. Since I added the addition they do nothing but sleep. Is it possible that they are depressed since they dont have to be together all the time, or is it possible that though the temp of my apartment hasnt changed, they know that its way hotter outside and it makes them more tired? Also, I notice that they have split up the new set up of the house. Before they had 1 1/2 floors (the base floor, and a shelf that they ate off of, and a hammoc). I added a whole floor (where I put one of their three huts) and another bigger shelf where they eat their treats. Scoot stays in the bottom section (usually in the hammoc) and Scat sleeps on the new level. Any ideas? Do you guys notice your guys sleeping more when the temp changes outside?
Sorry that I am talking so much. I guess I'm pretty lonely and since I have these rashes I'm not playing with the boys as much, and its hard on me, and them. Thanks for any help you guys give me, and really for reading this if you actually read it all.
Dewi - 16 Aug 2007 08:10 GMT Well as far as the vet thing goes. I'm diligent about treating respiratory problems with my rats now, simply because it can kill them so easily. I've found that once a vet gets to know me and I've show I have a good understanding of the signs, symptoms, causes and treatments of routine things like respiratory infections, they have (so far) been willing to give me antibiotics without an appointment. So this saves a heap of money. Tumours are the other thing I am diligent about, but your guys would be too young for this.
For things such as a lot of bleeding, bad rashes and runny or chronic diarrhoea, I would see a vet about. I guess with most other things you can probably quite safely wait and see how it pans out.
If it's something like the ringworm, just treat yourself first and don't spread it to the rats. If, after treating yourself, you re-catch ringworm, then it's probably time to take them to the vet. If they are rash and dandruff free, then there is a good chance that they are fine.
I find I stress about their health too and on many occasions I think about not getting any more rats after my current guys live out their life and have a break from them for a while. I love them dearly but the stress and heartache get too much sometimes.
As for the temperature, my rats sleep more when it gets hot and cold.

I bring my rats to the vet when I think it's appropriate.Newsgroups and forums are a great place to help you decide if it's time or not. Animals deserve to live a good quality life. Friend #1 sucks at pet keeping. Friend #2, is a little better and hopefully she will bring her rat to the vet when the rat really needs it. Friend #3 has the right idea but a little too paranoid. The vet keeps giving the same med because there's really only one good med for rats. Whatever the ailment, most times it's caused by myco and needs to be treated with the same med. I've been keeping rats since 2002. In the beginning, I was oblivious to all the proper care. Then I decided to do some research, I was tired of my rats dying before reaching 18 months. And now, I do worry but I don't jump the gun either. I assess their condition, research it and bring them to the vet if they need it. I try not to obsess over their health but I also make damn sure that everything I do is totally healthy for them.

jennjenn84 - 16 Aug 2007 18:38 GMT As of right now I dont see any rashes or dandruff on them. Though I notice Scoot scratching a bit more it might also be because I am paying more attention to it that i am noticing it. They could be scraching just as much as normal and I am just paying more attention to it. It also seems to be more wide spread scraching, not just one spot. I guess I just feel like sometimes its not worth it, but then when they come up to me and give me kisses and cuddles, I know it is. For rashes (or supposed rashes) at what point would you go to the vet? I think I am going to follow the advice that was given on clearing it up on me and unless I see a rash on them, I'm not going to take them unless I get it again. Sometimes I wish I could be ignorant, and not know things.

Sometimes I wish I could be > ignorant, and not know things. I find the best way to know if there's a dermal problem, check for small scabs. Itchy rats will scratch incessantly and end up scabbing themselves. If you see that, then perhaps it would be time for a vet visit. Until then, treat yourself and watch for any changes in the ratties.

jennjenn84 - 18 Aug 2007 03:07 GMT I dont see any scabs or anything. A few scraches on Scats hands, but that is probably just from cleaning himself. Scoot once had it, and I asked the vet and she said its just from cleaning.

If your sweeties have no scabs, they are probably ok.

jennjenn84 - 21 Aug 2007 01:19 GMT I was giving my boys a bath today and I noticed that Scat has little brown dots all over his body. i'm not sure if it is just his skin or something else. They didnt wash off, and no matter how much I scrached at them they still didnt come off. We have an apointment tomorrow for them. I'll let you know what they have.

It sounds like mites, easily treated. I would get Scoot treated at the same time and thoroughly was down the cage and bedding etc. I wonder if it could maybe an be early sign of ringworm though as it is infectious, same regime though if it is.
jennjenn84 - 21 Aug 2007 18:41 GMT Well, I went to the vet today. I was shocked when this other lady walked in. Apparently she is the other vet in the building, and she says she has as much rat experience as the other lady. I didnt like her as much, and the boys just peed and pooped all over the place. (It was almost like they were doing it on purpose because they didnt like her.
The weighed Scat, and Scoot who have both gained a lot of weight. Scat is now just about 400 grams, and Scoot is 511. I dont know how much they are supposed to weigh, but I am putting them on a diet. No more mixed food, just the blocks (since i can really control how much they eat, and it provides a much better balance diet. They are going to hate it!
The vet said that I shouldnt have brought them in so soon after their bath (but realistically I brought them in as soon as possible to hopefully prevent them from getting worse). She took a sample and basically looked over the spots and decided that they are Mites (most likely), and gave both of them medication. She also said that I need to bring Scat back in in two weeks so they can give him more meds to really kill them (the bugs, not the rats). They said I could just come pick it up, and not bring him in, and that's probably what I'll do as bringing them across town is a pain and stresses them out, and they dont need that.
She said they dont seem to have ringworm, and that if they catch it then I'll know since it will cause them to loose their hair, and almost seem to go bald in the areas where they have it. So, it looks like they do in fact not have it... which is good to know. I still have to be on watch for the next 6 months, since it is still in the environment for that long, but at least at the moment its all good.

Sounds like a good vet visit. Excellent that you can pick up the extra med without bringing in the rats again. I too would put them on blocks alone. It's much healthier and easier to maintain their weight gain.

jennjenn84 - 22 Aug 2007 23:31 GMT I am planning on making the change once I get back from my trip. I got a job, but it doesnt start until September 17th, so I am going to go see my parents while I can. The boys will be coming with me, and I am worried for a lot of reasons. It is going to be hot going over the mountains, its a really long drive that I always just do in one day (its 12 hours). I have a pretty good feeling that they will sleep the whole time, but I just hope that they can calm down and fall asleep as usually they are stressed out and running all over. I am going to put them in the back seat, so hopefully without having me sitting right next to them will help them go to sleep. I am also going to leave their waterbottle on their cage, even though most say not to. I am going to put a bowl under it so that any loose water can be caught.
Do you guys know if Benedril has the same sleeping affect on rats that it does for people? Any ideas about a mild sedadive, or really any ideas on how to make it easier for them?
