(+ update:
I have recently adopted new new hooded rats named Ninja and Lighting.
They seem to get a long with minus a few fights mainly due to
dominance, or trying to find some social order. But the new two pair
seem to be fine. Healthy, minus one starting to sneeze. But I am going
to guess that it is a myco flare up, and that a trip to the vet is in
his future. Which I will call later today. Hopefully.)
I was sitting next to my cage fifteen minutes ago, watching Fin and
talking to him. When I looked at him something about his face was
different, almost as if he started to gain excess weight around that
area. So I picked up out of the cage, sat him on the top. There is a
big lump just around his neck around. Round. Dime-sized.
Earlier today I joined porphyrin around his nose. But I did not think
much of it as I figured his brother dying, be alone, and dealing with
two new rats might of been the cause of it. He didn't seem to be sick
at all. He is still active. But when I picked him up he made this
strange sound---which my brain keeps screaming "GUINEA PIG! GUINEA
PIG!"
If it a tumor, would it be safe to operate? Or should I just leave it
alone? I know plenty of rat owners have had rats that lived happy, fun-
filled lives despite having tumors. That, and his quality of life has
not changed.

I mentioned this on another form, and someone said it was possible
that Fin has SDA. (The symptoms he showed would be swelling under the
neck, porphyrin, and some sneezing there and there. I caught him
sneezing. But it is not bad as he has not done it since.)
My problem is I feel I should of quarantined for maybe a week or two. :
\ I feel sort of bad. I'd rather have it be a tumor, and know it is
not contagious. As mean as that might sound.

Could it be an abscess? Could he have had a scrap with the newbies and
perhaps been bitten or scratched?
HTH, but it probably doesn't.
Gentle scritches to Fin

There were no scratches around that area.
Whatever it was, the lump has decreased in size.

I bet it was an abscess... try and see if there's a scab there, if so, I
would peel it off gently, squeeze the rest of the pus out, flush it once
or twice and then it should heal up nicely.

I looked---and nothing is there!
Unless for some reason it was swelling caused by something else.
