girls making funny noises?

How do?

One or two of the girls make funny noises late in the afternoons. I'm
not sure what she is doing, but I have never heard it in a rat before
- not that I have had that much experience with rat vocalisations.

It sounds like ...a ...um...half snore, kind of. If you pretend to
snore on the inhalation, it sounds like the first two 'kah's' - if
that makes any sense.

Is this a normal chattering thing or a vet worthy occurance?

Just checked Tippys lungs which sound clear most of the time, but on
one side she rasps intermittently - mostly when trying to squirm away.
Sounds like a Drs visit is on the cards anyway.

I would take Tippy to the vet, you can't be too careful.
It's always best to catch respiratory illness quickly.

Well, three went to the vet today (wasn't going to try and cart 11 in)
Apollo, Tippy and Christmas. Christmas went coz she has been looking
seedy - I reckon thats the lice, and probably having to deal with
popcorny girls. Apollo was the one I caught sneezing this morning,
thankfully I saw it and checked to see which one was doing the
sneezing. Tippy has been sounding clearer, but went anyway.

We came home with VibraVet for the sneezing and Revolution for the
lice. the revolution was a bad deal all round, the little kitten vial
only did the six boys at one drop each. I'll be getting the Ivermectin
single horse dose I think. All eleven get to have meds, simply because
myco (if thats what it is/will be) is contagious. What fun!

Does anyone have tips on getting the right amount of VibraVet into the
rats? Other than using the syringe straight into mouths.

Best of all, the whole consult and both meds only cost me 51$ (heh,
yeah, *only*)

cheers,

Oh sorry about that! I suggested the Revolution to you on another rat
group, but I did manage to dose 10 rats from one tube. Did you measure
a drop out a syringe with an attached needle? I've actually started
treating only the itchy rats with lice stuff rather than all the rats
and so far that is working fine. I don't think they are all as
susceptible to lice. That's my current theory anyway.

It's definitely not necessary to give *all* your rats VibraVet (which
is doxycycline). Just about all rats carry mycobacterium, but when it
flares up and causes sneezing etc., that's when they need treatment.
Just give the sneezing rats the vibravet and save the rest of the
antibiotics for the next time.

This is what I do. For each sneezy rat I squirt the required dose into
a small dish then mix in a small glob of yogurt, soy milk or custard.
The rat eats it straight from the bowel or fingers. For vibravet I've
had better success with yoghurt and choc custard. Once I made choc
drops, with each choc drop having a single dose of vibravet. The rats
don't like vibravet and eventually refuse it. Baytril is some much
easier to give.

Well compared with Brisbane vets that's a good price. Although,
compared with Armidale vets, that's a tad expensive.

I read your other post, but had already dosed the boys well before it came in
:( Thanks though. I'll  remember that for next time.

I'd only give it to the sneezy ones, if I could actually catch them doing it
individually. Its not as bad with the girls, but with 5 boys all looking the
same, its hard to tell, and they move when I try to check who it was :s The
only one that doesn't sneeze that I have seen/heard is Barkley.

To get the meds into them I resorted to just putting the smidgen on my finger
and they lick it off - then try to steal the syringe. Its a ridiculously
small amount.

From what I gathered from the vet, I can go in without an appointment and get
more VibraVet. Cant complain about that.
