Easy (ish) tube hammock

1. Obtain a pair of small child's trousers (pretty cheap from a charity
shop, or a supermarket - I paid £4 for mine from a well-known supermarket
chain starting with T).

2. Unpick the seam (or cut, if you're lazy!) down the middle of the seat
of the trousers, all the way round the crotch and up to the bottom of the
fly, or where it would be if there was one.

3. Cut away only the front panel of the trousers (along the side-seams,
and across at about crotch level).

You should be left with two tubes each of which has a large flat
rectangle on one end (buttock plus leg). If you are not, something's gone
wrong. Blame my instructions :-)

4. Hem the edges, if you can be bothered, sewing in 6 loops - two at the
foot end of the trouser leg, two at the top of the trouser leg (where you
cut away the front panel earlier), and two slightly longer ones on the
far corners of the rectangle.

With any luck, you have a hammock which leads into a tube.

I just made one of these for my two boys and they love it. I used
trousers which had a furry velvety texture on the outside, so to make the
hammock I turned the trousers inside-out. The other leg I didn't use to
make a hammock-tube - I only used the leg, and made it a simple tube with
an exit-hole half way along, to give them some variety.

I haven't seen anything of this design in the shops, which is a pity - my
little guys seem to like it more than either a hammock or a tube.

Sounds good :)

We're pretty lazy & have taken to using old tops without any mod - just
stick in four jumbo paper clips at suitable points.

Some of them sleep together in the central hammock area, while a few
like to climb down the sleeves to get some peace. We also use bought
hammocks from another rat owner who makes them cheaply from a tea towel
& two pieces of fleece, as well as baby grows mostly from charity shops.

Their preference seems to vary & depend mostly on whether they want a
big group huddle, a chance to watch what's going on or some me time :)

I can sure understand why that would be a favourite.
Thanks for the tip!

It took me a little to work out, but I get it. I'll try this on an old
pair of pj's of mine . Of course I'll have to cut the legs shorter as
the tube will be too long. I'd also like to try those padded cubes
that you can get for rats; the type you hang up. I'm just wary as I
know they will eventually snack on it. Wish I had a sewing machine
now.

Thanks Rosemary.

I hope it works. I know my instructions aren't the clearest in the world,
because when I sew I tend to just work it out in my head and make
improvements as I go along, and then try and describe what I did; I don't
know anything about "proper" sewing. I have a sewing machine (ancient,
but it works) and every time I want to make something, I think to myself,
"Well, it'll take so long to get it out, set it up, oil all the parts,
thread it, and then when I'm finished put it all away again, that it'd be
quicker to do it by hand."

Then when I'm half-way through hand-sewing it, I think, "Damn. I wish I'd
used the sewing machine." :-)

I've not seen the padded cubes before. I've just done a search - they
look really nice! It's weird, how hammocks for rats have taken off in
such a big way. I wonder who first had the idea. When I get new rats, I
always try them out on a yellow duster folded in two, and hung up by the
four corners, to see if they chew it, before I go to the effort of sewing
a more robust version. It's so funny seeing a rat use a hammock for the
first time - the way they brace all their legs and try to fight against
the swaying so it wobbles about all over the place! They soon seem to get
the hang of it though. I've never met a rat that doesn't love hammocks.
