Looks like getting Art and Tar a ferret nation cage is not going to be the
best idea, I am going to get them a single level cage.
Tar has mediumly bad hind leg paralysis and Art has the onset of it. Last
night I thought Tars urine was quite strong and he had soaked his bedding.
He happily provide the vet with a sample (all over his table), the vet
found blood, protien and a bacterial infection. I took Art along with me as
well as his health is concerning me too, he has aanother tumour where he had
the double lumpectomy earlier in the year, he also has a small lump on his
stomach, the vet said he thinks his liver is enlarged as well. They were
both given baytril injections and a weeks suplly to be given orally and I
asked for metacam for Tar to see if it will help his mobility any. I know
long term use of metacam os not so good but I feel that if it helps the pros
out weigh the cons all things considered.

It's time to make their life comfortable... Aging rats deserve the very
best and it sounds like a once level cage might be the best thing for them.

You're right there Joanne, I intend to give them anything that will make
their life
comferatable and make things as easy as I can for them. Poor Art had quite a
bit of
porphyrin on and around his nose earlier, but he was at the vets surgery
with quite
alot of noise earlier and then had an injection, so I hope it was stress and
not pain
from ill health that cause the porphyrin.

I also have two rat boys, Zac and Ginger, who are developing hind leg
paralysis and who have now entered old age I guess :( It's really is
very sad seeing them change.
Someone suggested glucosamine and omega-3 to help with the paralysis.
I've only just started giving it to my boys so I'm not sure if it
helps, but it may be worth giving it a try.

My Mum takes glucosamine along with her prescription meds for artheritis, I
will
get some from her. Tar seems to be walking about more today, he is still
dragging his legs
about the same, but I don't think he is in as much pain. The metacam seems
to be helping.
I had a look at the single cages our local petshop has on display and did
not really like any of them,
they all have pretty deep bases, Art and Tar are used to seeing whats going
on around them
so I'd hate for them to be at the bottom of a cage looking at plastic. After
a lot of thought I went
ahead and ordered another ferret nation, it will be alot easier for them to
navigate than their current cage
(a superpet ferret deluxe) with fleece on the ramps they will still manage
the levels for now and I can
review the situation with further mods to the cage as they get older.

LOL! You're like me with the cage buying. Can never have too many IMO.
Art and Tar are very luck to have a mum like you and I know they will
appreciate it.

Thanks Dewi,
I only wish I had discovered how great the ferret nation cage is a long time
ago.
I'm just about to go and change the bedding in the wee guys cage. I made a
couple of
sets tonight.
I will list the furet tower on ebay at the weekend as it is in as new
condition.
Art and Tars superpet cage is not bad condition except they have nibbled on
a couple
of the edges on the shelves, amazing cage though as it has stood up to Arts
chewing better
than my couch did or my trainers LOL.
