Has anyone used Ipakitine before?

Mandie @k@ Zepherous - 08 Nov 2007 03:11 GMT I've just ordered a pot of ipakitine powder for Tar to see if it will help him with his hind legs problem. As he has blood and protien in his urine I'm leaning toward thinking it may be his kidneys that are causing the problems he is having. Has anyone tried ipakitine before and what were the results like?
Here is a link to the powder I ordered: http://www.nutrecare.co.uk/prod5.asp?prod_id=1856&id=141

If it is his kidneys maybe the protein content of Tars food needs to be cut down. The blood could also be due to an infection??

Tar doesn't get alot of protein in his diet , he's been on a "healthy eating" diet for some time now. Tar did have an infection a couple of weeks ago and has now completed his meds, the vet said his bladder was quite full and the infection was probably caused by urine retention. The vet feels he can do no more for Tar so I feel giving the ipakatine a try is worth a shot, it won't do any harm and may do some good.
bevluvsrats - 11 Nov 2007 16:51 GMT > I can't find the article I read last night but found this.http://www.freewebs.com/miscrats/hlpkdchf.htm Oooh, I'm feeling all excited now, that's my website! First time I've seen my stuff quoted, lol.
Yes, I've used Ipakitine many many times in both bucks and does and it's saved many lives.
Somewhere I have some film of an old rat I had called Sophie. I took film of her with the floppy feet that usually leads to hind leg paralysis, I started her on Ipakitine and took more film, and her walking got better and better until it was right back to normal.
I've also had bucks come back from complete paralysis because of Ipakitine.
Of course sometimes hind leg weakness or paralysis isn't caused by the kidneys, but my vet palpates the abdomen of my rats and feels if their kidneys are knobbly or small or just unusual, and we go from there.
Ipakitine is unlikely to do harm if it's not needed as it's just chitosan and calcium, but it works by binding fats so they're pooed rather than weed, so if Ipakitine isn't needed it'll still bind the fats, which might cause a problem somewhere else, but easily reversible by stopping the Ipakitine.
I always have some on hand and if I suspect kidney problems I start them on it first and watch their behaviour for a couple of days. If the hind legs start to get better, I keep on, but if there's no change I then decide whether to give it more time or quit.
Hope that all makes sense, I've had quite a week and am exhausted so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm having difficulty describing what I mean, lol.
Thanks for visiting my medical site. My other one is at www.sylviathornhill.co.uk/bev/index.html

I ordered the ipakatine with next day delivery and it still hasn't arrived
:-( I really think Tars problems with his legs are due to kidney problems, he started out with floppy feet and now I have even had to take his litter tray out of his cage as he was having difficulty getting out of it, he was sort of leaving his back legs behind :-( Hopefully the ipakatine will arrive soon.

Yep, sounds like he's got the kidney problem, make sure he's got plenty to drink and keep an eye on the fat and salt intake in his food.
Darnit, I really should dig out the video I have of my Sophie with floppy legs, you can really see the difference.
I have to update all of my websites very soon anyway because they're out of date (not so much the medical stuff, more the rats that I still have as so many are partying at the bridge now), I'll be getting on with that over Christmas, hopefully it'll be finished by the new year.
Just in case anyone's interested, I also run a group on Yahoo called Clubrats2, it's an email group (if you set it to send you emails that is, you don't have to), I don't tend to have much luck with newsgroups like this as I'm still on dialup and it takes quite a while to get pages to load, but with my group I just check my emails, so if anyone is interested in joining, here's the link:

I would love to see the video of Sophie, how long did it take before you noticed a difference?
I have to update my site, but I haven't had a chance or the heart to do it yet, as Arts photos are on it and it's a bit soon for me after loosing him :-(
I have joined Clubrats2 :-) I haven't posted yet due to being so tied up with things and not getting a chance to get to the PC until 4 and 5 am , I also have a bug right now which is horrible.

> I would love to see the video of Sophie, how long did it take > before you noticed a difference? With Sophie it was literally overnight. It wasn't a complete change but her feet and legs were much much stronger, and she just got stronger and stronger from there. I think the clips I took were the first day without Ipakitine, and then the next dat with Ipakitine so you could see the difference overnight.

Hope you're feeling better soon and also Tar of course. Keep me posted.

He bit my friend yesterday, which pleased us very much lol. He has always bitten anyone except me who puts their hands in his cage (he is fine out of the cage) we were worried last week when he never bit her LOL.
I still have this bug, it is horrible, I slep 14 hours straight and still feel tired :-(
Rosemary - 16 Nov 2007 02:44 GMT One of my rats had what the vet thought was probably a kidney problem - red urine and strange-feeling kidneys - and she wanted a urine sample!

Normally a urine sample is easier to get that most people think - rats love to wee on the vet's table, lol.
If the urine was red then that's probably blood. It could also be an infection that has affected the kidneys so she'd probably give antibiotics as well.

Normally a urine sample is easier to get that most > people think - rats love to wee on the vet's table, lol. This one didn't - grrr. She didn't seem to wee an awful lot, except on tissue paper bedding, and occasionally a smear somewhere here or there. It seems to be different with girls and boys, and between individual rats. I wouldn't have many problems getting a urine sample from one of the boys I've got now, but with the girls it sometimes seemed to be a different matter. The vet wanted an uncontaminated sample delivered in a plastic test tube - even if I could have got her to wee somewhere, it's incredibly tricky to get such a small amount in the tube, and impossible not to contaminate it. I'm not sure it would have been enough to sample, anyway. She decided it wouldn't do too much harm to put her on antibiotics, even though she couldn't be sure whether the redness was blood or something else, and also advised a very low protein diet. The rat lived a good few of months longer IIRC.
