Tried a little experiment with my rats today. I used a (nontoxic) Sharpie
to label 4 different kinds of lab blocks: Teklad 2014, Teklad 2018, Teklad
8640 and Mazuri Rat & Mouse Diet. Put two pellets of each in the rats'
dish.
So far there are two Mazuri left and one 8640. They will not touch the
Mazuri, which is closest in composition to the 8640 (soy and corn). I had
it in there for the past week and they hated it. As soon as I put the
Harlan in they grabbed it up and dragged it into their houses where they've
been munching on it since.
They're still a little young for the 2014 but it's nice to know they'll chow
on it when the time comes.

Update. I cleaned their cage a little tonight and lifted up their wooden
house and it appears that, though they stored the 2014 in there, they've
actually been munching on the 2018.

I don't know if Mazuri changed their formulation recently but my ratties
have been treating it as if it were sawdust. They stash but don't really eat
it.
On to try Harlan. I wonder why it is getting more difficult to obtain.

I feed all my rats the 2014, from 5 weeks old to 44 months old.
