Now that could only happen to me

Mandie @k@ Zepherous - 05 Jan 2008 09:31 GMT I've been bitten on the lip....by myself. Doowie has a thing about feet, he caught me a really sore one on my toe I was that surprised I bit my lip, both bites bleeding and amazingly stinging. You could say I now have foot and mouth. That's 2 mornings in a row Doowie has caught me out and bit my foot while the 3 boys were out on the bed, if I put socks on Doowie and Behn bite my feet. LOL, they do develop some strange habits , it's not a little nibble but a full on hard chomp. I wonder if you can get steel toe cap slippers :-)
jennjenn84 - 08 Jan 2008 03:26 GMT I got bit on the toe yesterday while laying on my couch. I was reading a book and had my feet on the arm rest of the couch and they must have gotten close to the cage because all of a sudden Scoot bit my big toe. Man it bled! Its fine now, but man, it was painful!

I pulled back the quilt to see a look of amazement on Doowies face and had to give him a big hug for shouting youch too loud.

The two I have at the moment have never bitten anyone, and the vast majority of the others I've had didn't, either. Bing and Bong were a couple of rats who bit when I got them; they were sisters and looking back I really shouldn't have bought rats from that shop as they had a "leave 'em all in together, that way we get more rats to sell" kind of policy. They both bit at first, but Bing was pregnant when I got her, so while Bong learned she didn't need to be scared quickly, Bing took a lot longer to learn. Eventually you could stick your fingers in the cage and neither would bite. I don't like rats to bite, even with fingers stuck through the cage.
Chips was another matter, though. Her mother had one of the loveliest temperaments I've ever seen in a rat, but Chips would speed from the opposite end of the cage towards your fingers to bite them, even though she was blind and couldn't see them. She would also bite if you put your hand in the cage to change the food or take one of the rats out. You didn't have to put your hand anywhere near her, she would run from wherever she was and sink her teeth in before you could whip your hand out. Evil rat! But she didn't really bite when out of the cage.
There's the fear bite, the exploratory bite, the "whoops I thought you were food" bite, the play bite, the fight bite, and the aggressive territorial or get away from my babies bite. I'm not entirely sure which one Doowie and Behn's biting is. I'm guessing exploratory, whoops or play. I'm not sure how you could stop them doing it - have you tried something like shouting NO the moment they do it?

jennjenn84 - 08 Jan 2008 07:34 GMT I think my Scoot's bite was more of a 'what the crap is that? well, i dont know so im gonna bite it and make it go away". Once I yelled and called him a 'bad boy' he went back into his hammoc and looked like he felt really bad. But it still hurt super bad.

Once I yelled and > called him a 'bad boy' he went back into his hammoc and looked like he > felt really bad. But it still hurt super bad. Awww, poor Scoot! I was always very surprised by how much it hurt when Chips bit me. It used to bleed for longer than I thought possible for such a small-looking wound. I think it may have been a small entrance wound but then her teeth would do that weird separating thing and rip the flesh on the inside, otherwise it wouldn't bleed that long! :-)
Maybe your foot didn't smell like you, you know, being a foot and everything :-P

Isn't that strange? It's obvious he doesn't want to hurt you. I must say, though, my rats love the reaction they get when they tickle my feet (recoiling, screaming and giggling all at the same time).
> And Behn only bites my feet when I have socks on, I think he is > looking for my feet, LOL. Heh :-) I've had rats nibble at my socks before (though luckily they avoided the toes). It's better than eyelash grooming, though!

Grandma Jo - 09 Jan 2008 03:44 GMT I've had 8 rats now, and I've noticed that all of them want to nibble on toes with socks on them. If the feet are bare they never do that. It seems like they think there may be food and don't get it that it's part of the person. I've learned to keep sock feet away from the little guys. - Grandma Jo

I think rats see socks, spectacles, jewellry, sticking plasters, etc. as "Things-that-don't-belong-on-our-humans".
Every new rat I've homed since I had my eyebrow pierced has tried to remove the piercing - ouch. They've also tried to remove my jewellry on many occasions, especially if I wear something different, and I've had my spectacles pulled off more times than I care to remember.
I've given up using plasters because they don't last two minutes if my lads get near them and they aren't exactly gentle at removing them.
