I've just discovered why the rats were so eager to squeeze their way
into the shallow central drawer of the desk; it turns out there was a
tube of UHU glue in there. By the time I caught them there was already a
tooth-sized hole in the side of the time, and fumes oozing everywhere...
even when I took it away, they kept coming back to that spot and
apparently inhaling deeply...

I suppose that explains what happened back in the other drawer, when I
found a dried-out empty tube with stuff stuck together all over the
place -- I assumed the lid had come off at some point!

All rats seem to go nuts for tobacco of any kind ("Ooh, look! Give give
give!"), and I've found prescription psychotropic medicines nibbled at,
before I found out and decided I'd better keep them somewhere non-rat-
accessible. They also seem to want to seek out and devour alcohol and
(ahem) cannabis, which of course belonged to aa friend of mine who was
visiting, which I had no idea at all they had, of course :-)

They're just like people in this regard, I think - love drugs, love altered
consciousness - but have no knowledge of the consequences, sadly :-( But I
guess that's part of the reason why they're so useful in research. Rats
have the same social structure as we have, are hunter-gatherers like us (or
scavengers, as the anthropocentric prefer to say), which I reckon explains
why behaviourally and psychologically they're so similar to us.

Makes me think of that Amy Winehouse song,"Rehab",:

They tried to make me go to rehab
I said no, no, no.

LOL!

This explains why they were going nuts to get to a rum ball (which contained
a bottle of rum) I recon they would have killed each other for it if I
didn't intervene.
