Hi everyone,

I'll be adopting two young male rats (5 weeks old) from the humane
society next week and I need some suggestions about what to feed
them.  I went to the pet store yesterday to browse the selections and
need help narrowing down the field.  I was originally looking at
pellets since I know from rehabbing wildlife that small mammals tend
to pick the tasty bits out of mixes and ignore the rest.  However one
of the pellet brands said it was only recommended for rats over 4
months old.  Right now I'm leaning toward Mazuri pellets and
supplementing them with fresh veggies, fruits, etc.

What have you found to be the best diet for young rats?

Thanks!
Kate

Hi Kate!
I can only tell you what my ratties like..

you can buy rat museli and pellets which are suitable for any age and
include all the nutrients they need, but my rats love little treats. They do
like crunchy pellets at all ages but like dried and fresh sweet corn, peas,
and weetabix with milk, though not too much.  All of my rats love any
cereal, left over Cheerios!. grapes and especially mash potato!! dont forget
also that they like a little ham and are also partial to prawns.  Everything
in moderation really but they drink loads! Dont forget to put in some wooden
toys for gnawing and cardboard tubes.

There's never a dull moment with rats. they are so entertaining and
loveable.  I've just introduced a third male rat; there are a few squabbles
at the moment but I'm hoping that settles. It's better Dylan is with other
rats than spend his life alone in a pet shop:@(

Good luck,

Julia

Hi.
Another very important note... never feed boys oranges. Never feed any
rats apple seeds.
