My two rats arrived yesterday and spent their first night at home.  No
names yet, I'm waiting to see what their personalities are like once
they've settled down and gotten used to their new living situation.
They're 5 weeks old and were born at the humane society.

I got the cage used, and covered the wire floors and ramps with
plastic drawer liner.  I have noticed that now that the ramps are
covered, they're too steep for the rats to climb up.  They've instead
learned to climb up the side of the cage to get to the next level.
Should I leave the ramps covered, or take the sheeting off?  The wire
squares are about 1/2"x1/2".

Thanks!

Oh my gosh they are so cute!  I love little rattie baby faces.  They
look like my old girl Darla.  Congratulations!  I don't know what you
should do about the sheeting.

Thanks Marlo,

It seems as if they just needed a day or two to get used to things,
last night I caught them running up and down the ramps, so all is well
there.

I have discovered though, that while they seem very capable of hording
their Mazuri food blocks, they don't seem all that interested in
eating them.  They were being fed a mix with seeds and corn before,
but I wanted to try getting them onto block diet supplemented with
fruits & veggies and some treats to be sure they're getting all the
proper nutrients.  I wonder if giving them a day to get a bit hungry
would encourage them to chow down, but I don't want to starve them!

Oh they won't starve. Rats are way too into survival for that!  I would
probably deprive them of other stuff and get them eating their rat
blocks. The blocks have complete nutrition that they don't get when they
pick and choose treats.  They're like people... we'd eat ice cream all
the time if we could!
