Pippy to the left.

They prefer printer paper to any kind of hut I give them. Somehow they
fold it into little lean-tos. ;-) Or they just lay on it.

They've outgrown their initial finickiness and will now eat, in addition to
popcorn (which they never thought twice about), raisins, cherries, peanut
butter, celery, carrot, and Pippy's absolute favorite thing in the world,
Cheerios!

That rat LOVES Cheerios, man.

They both love peanut butter too, and will lick a finger absolutely clean
of it. My finger comes back cleaner than it was before I stuck it in the
peanut butter.

Neither welcomes being picked up, though. Pippy is better about being
held. When we take them out to the couch, Squidgy just wants to hide. I
hope they get better about this over time. Am I correct that I should just
hold them as much as possible (whether they like it or not) 'till they grow
accostomed to human touch, and start to enjoy it?

yup, that's why it is always recommended for traps.

i think that some people would debate it but my advice is that yeah, you
should handle them whenever possible. a good thing is to keep putting one
hand in front of the other and let them run (like a treadmill) to burn off
the nervous energy and also get them used to "the hand". it should be noted
that some rats love to hide and are most happy when they are trying to find
places to hide. if you want to keep him nearby get a sock or something for
him to hangout in at playtime.

Yes, I'd recommend picking them up & handling them as much as possible
until they get used to you. They will, faster than you think. When I
have my new little ones out on my lap on the couch I drape an old
towel lengthwise over my entire chest & lap first. The towel protects
my clothes from any "accidents" and I can fold the towel different
ways to make tunnels & hidey-holes for them in my lap. Always talk to
them & call them by name as your approach to give them warning that
you are coming. Soon they will come to associate your approach with
good things like treats & petting.
