So my rats broke their wheel and I didn't fix it for about a month. In that time, just a month, one rat gained 3 oz (12 -> 15 oz) while the other gained 2 oz (11 -> 13 oz). The 15 oz rat looked like a volleyball! So I got a little worried and fixed the wheel and they've been running like crazy and look like they've dropped a little weight. I couldn't believe they got that huge without exercise. Oh yes, I have one that looks like a volleyball. HE refuses to use the wheel. He prefers food as a sport.
