Our Alpha passed today

Lynn "kitty" - 09 Oct 2008 00:43 GMT Alpha, our big PEW Dumbo passed away today. The past couple of days have been rough. We are pretty sure that he was a Zucker Rat - obese by genetics, not by choice. The Fellow just could not help himself and he got bigger and bigger. As of 3 days ago, he was 1 pound, 14.2 ounces.
He was sweet and charming and has the most amazing capacity for love. Yes, he was obese in LOVE, too. But sadly, last night I could tell his little heart was not working so well anymore. He could no longer go up and down the ladders or lift himself into the boxes. SO I got everyone out and we all went into the bathroom for playtime. He was THRILLED and chuffed and bruxed to high heaven.
This morning, he was still with us, but the afternoon, I returned from a Doctor's appointment and there was a smell. I was just going to give everyone a peanut, and he did not come out. Pichu was in the igloo downstairs laying with him, but he was cooling and gone. She was so wonderful to take care of him. I am so proud of her. She has now lost two of her friends. Sadly, she has developed a tumor . I am afraid she is next. I cannot afford surgery and she is an old girl, not fit for much more.
Cosmo is having lung issues. SO it is sad times in my rat land, but I love them and know, life is short but FABULOUS with them.
Thanks for listening, Lynn "kitty"

All we can do is show them the best possible life while their here and cherish them in our memories when they're gone.
Lynn "kitty" - 10 Oct 2008 05:04 GMT Thanks Steve. You are a darling.

Lynn "kitty" - 11 Oct 2008 16:26 GMT I am down to Hugh, Cosmo, Gerard and Pichu. It is so quiet now. Four may seem a lot, but when the most spirited have gone, the remaining ones seems so subdued, even depressed.
I am not up to getting new ones right now. I don't blame you though for wanting a wild boy. They are such fun.

They're still healthy and fairly active, but definitely slowing down a bit, and I know the day isn't too far off when we're going to have to have a ratty funeral and the whole family is going to be in mourning for weeks. We've got a great pro-rat vet, and have a little money set aside for the day that they need that lumpectomy or whatever it takes to keep them going and comfortable as long as possible. Rats are such sweet little critters, it makes them so hard to let go of, even though their time with us is short.
