I was just talking about Sukey earlier this afternoon; and I've just
gone to get her out to play, only to find her dead.  I'd fed them
about two hours ago and she was fine then.  I can' t quite believe
it.  She was only eleven weeks old.

There was a little blood around her nose and mouth, and she'd had a
scratch three days ago, which the vet said was healing nicely.
Please, does anyone have any ideas what might have happened?

OMG! Sarah, I'm so sorry! I have no idea what could have happened. I have
heard of a virus that can be fatal within 48hrs but you would have seen
symptoms. And please don't let it be a virus because that would mean your
others will be at risk. Maybe a heart defect? You could ask on that
rathealth.co.uk site or the fancy rat site as that has an extensive health
section. Please accept my sincere condolances. I recently lost two girls so
I know how much it hurts.

Thanks Andrea,

Yes, it does hurt. I had no idea how bad it would be, and thought I'd
have a good two years before having to face such a thing...  I think
it was her heart or maybe a stroke.  She was fine at about seven
o'clock and I found her just after eight, so not a virus; the others
should be safe.

When the other rats came out they were weird.  They stayed close for
ages, and Coco was bruxxing more than usual. I think she was trying to
make herself feel better, or maybe she was comforting me...  Today
Moonshine is back to sleeping on her own, which is the hardest thing
to see...

I'm so sorry that you have had to go through this twice in a short
period of time.  I could only guess how it would feel before this, and
that doesn't even come close.

i'll take a guess and agree that it sounds like heart. long ago, one of my
rats caught her little foot in the cage while climbing upside down when i
was not home. she died of fright (heart attack). when i found her, she had
the blood around the nose and otherwise looked normal.
or perhaps a cerebral hemorrhage.

I am so terribly sorry! I send you a needed hug!

I have also been with one of my babies, only to find them dead hours later.

Without being there, and knowing your fur babe, I cannot truly tell you what
happened. But I have lost mine to age, stroke, heart trouble, etc. I wish I
could give you more.

With love,
Lynn kitty
