Bath time

J&S Bouchard - 23 Oct 2003 17:18 GMT Last weekend, I decided to pull up my sleeves and give my rats a bath. I used bunny shampoo because it is made specifically and ph balanced for small animals. After the rats got over the "I'm drowning, I'm drowning" fear, I think they actually had fun. I put just enough water so that the rats actually had to wade through the water. Another thing I've noticed... when I did my Benny and Russo, I also added my Blues. I watched carefully as they don't get along, but they were so busy in the water, they left each other alone. It's a good thing my sister was there to help me out, cause the buggers are excellent jumpers, we towel dried them and we allowed them to run around the bathroom floor for awhile. I also trimmed all their back nails. My ratties all have nice shiny bright coats now. I had actually started to think that my Sullivan was a black hooded with a beige coat... surprise, his coat is not beige but white. lol I have some pics of bath time... check out the fun: http://community.webshots.com/album/96203884kYslET

Kelly - 23 Oct 2003 19:06 GMT When I had my girls I bathed them once and they HATED it!!! They wouldn't stop squeaking as if they were drowning and they kept on trying to jump out of the bathtub!! Never again did I bath them, although they smelt so beautiful afterwards!

I just love the way they look when they are all wet! I take mine with me in the shower sometimes. They like to play with the water that comes from above, and I take them in my hands and wash them a bit. They seem to like it better then being totally immersed in water. And the good thing is I'm already wet too, so no need to bother about the splashing and jumping!

But the little blighters have nails like needles, and I'd probably end up looking like Dracula's dinner. Oh well, they like playing splashies in the tub.

Klary - 27 Oct 2003 22:55 GMT No, they don't scratch, squeek or try to get away.. guess I'm just blessed with some very well-behaved rats!

Klary - 28 Oct 2003 09:24 GMT I got them from a great breeder who handled them a lot from birth and they are really very human-friendly ratties! the shower thing, I only discovered that by chance as I had them running around in the bathroom once when I was taking a shower (most of my friends would by the way consider this to be 'one of the gross things I do with my rats'..) when I saw that they liked to play with the water that came from the shower. So there have been a lot of fun bathroom moments since then (and i don't tell my friends about it..)

And the steam of the shower is great for the little ones.

Kate - 29 Oct 2003 01:54 GMT I have contemplated adding some Ratties to my shower time... the only thing that puts me off from doing that is that they may be scarred for life...:) and need some serious psychological help !!

I try and hold their necks/head and tummy/back end and sort of swish them through the water very slowly. Kind of like you have your hand over the side of a boat and are running it back and forth. People do that because it's relaxing It's the same theory it seems to relax them for a while. Well I'm off to bed but I can't wait to see the pics! J

Like Yana said, they all puff up into fluffy soft little balls of rats. :)

Tracey - 24 Oct 2003 12:07 GMT Bless their little fuzzy bottoms! What great pics - I wish I could get my rats to enjoy bathtime, they absolutely hate it, get so scared and poop and cry so much :o( Maybe I should try putting all three in the bath next time as when they are alone they seem to panic like hell.

But then I decided to put them all in... sure your arms all get cut up and you look like a junkie for a while, but after the initial shock, they get over it and wade around in the water. I also noticed it's better with more water than shallow water. This way, when they do jump, the "plop" back in the water. Some do make it over the tub, and come resting on the side... but they don't go anywhere, just walk around the tub. I don't recommend doing a bunch of rats alone though... unless you have your door closed and a strong heart. lol

Dale Voss - 24 Oct 2003 13:11 GMT We're lucky, we've got an old bath with a sloped bottom, so it they get sick of swimming they can run up to the shallow end and just wade. :-D
never had any problems with the "i'm drowing! i'm drowning!" thing tho. -- I'm not handicapped, I'm just lazy.

They were so adorable. My hubby and I got a real kick out of them. It looks like your rats enjoys their baths way more than mine does. He poops all over, repeatedly hops out of the sink, and I end up with quite a few battle scars.

Don't get me wrong, the tub was full of poops, I was scooping the slippery suckers out as fast as I could. And I do have scratched up arms....lol. But I think more fun was had then not. :)
