rat's teeth problem

Apologies if this is one of those Frequently Asked Questions that has
already been answered many times!

My male rat Chomsky's bottom teeth (the two big ones) have started
growing sideways so they don't wear down like they normally would. If
left unattended to they would just grow and spear his upper jaw/cheeks.

We've had them clipped by the vet three times but after the first time
it became necessary to sedate him to do this. The teeth grow back again
in about three weeks. I'm worried that the constant repetition of this
procedure might not be good for him (he's only18 months old) and, of
course, it's a bit expensive although that isn't my main worry.

My vet doesn't know whether these teeth can be extracted and is making
enquiries about this. So I thought I would just check whether anyone
here has had their rat's teeth extracted, whether it was successful and
what problems there may be with it (what do you feed them, for
example).

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Sorry I can't advise on ratty tooth extraction, but I did once see a vet on
tv extract two front teeth of a rabbit, who had the same problem, so maybe
it is possible.

Have you tried doing a little research on the net?  Try one of the good
search engines such as Google and imput something like 'rat tooth
extraction' and see if it turns anything up.

Oh man... I'm scared enough of dentist, this would just do me in. I haven't
heard of tooth extraction, but I have heard of teeth being pulled out in a
accident of sorts. Didn't happen to me but I read of it somewhere. So, rats
to live ok with no teeth, as long as they live on soft foods.
So the reason for extraction is because rattie is not happy about it? I feed
my guys a rat block so this really keeps the teeth trimmed.
I hope all turns up good. Please let us know how it goes in the end. It
would be interesting to know how your rattie does with the extraction.
Good luck!

Thanks for the replies on this. I did look on the web but didn't find
anything conclusive. eg:

http://www.labanimal.com/col/diag10.html

It seems, though, that extraction probably isn't a good idea. My vet is
supposed to be looking into it for me so I'll see what he says.

No, the obvious things like giving him something to gnaw on don't work
anymore - I guess he finds it uncomfortable.

Oh my god that must have such a traumatizing experience. For you and
for the rat! I'm always afraid I will sit on my rats or step on them
when they are out of their cage, they are so small and fast.
I think there was a story on this group quite some time ago about
someone who stepped on his rat, unfortunately it died.
You were very lucky! A special little rattie indeed!
