Thanks for the replies on this. I did look on the web but didn't find
anything conclusive. eg:

http://www.labanimal.com/col/diag10.html
It seems, though, that extraction probably isn't a good idea. My vet is
supposed to be looking into it for me so I'll see what he says.
No, the obvious things like giving him something to gnaw on don't work
anymore - I guess he finds it uncomfortable.

Hi,
one of my rats had his bottom teeth removed a few months back and he
is getting fine with out them,he had to have them out because i stood
on him and his jaw broke and his teeth got pushed back and were not
meeting with the top ones, they were so pushed back and bent that they
were growing down his throat and he couldnt close his mouth,i was
taking him to the vets to have them clipped but with in a week they
were back and he couldnt drink or eat proberley, his front were pushed
forward so he found it impossible to eat or drink so they burnedthem

I'm so glad he's doing good... is he on a special diet now?

Oh my god that must have such a traumatizing experience. For you and
for the rat! I'm always afraid I will sit on my rats or step on them
when they are out of their cage, they are so small and fast.
I think there was a story on this group quite some time ago about
someone who stepped on his rat, unfortunately it died.
You were very lucky! A special little rattie indeed!
