Apparently doxycycline is not available in this country at all.My new vet
who is from New Zealand said she used to use Vibravet over there but it
suddenly disappeared from medical supplies list. She doesn't know why but
guesses it had something to do with the financial side -as in the cost of
licensing to use for small animals. So she has given our Beau
Oxytetracycline which will not kill the myco virus but will give his immune
system a real boost so he can fight it harder. We'll try anything -fingers
crossed for him.

I doubt tetracycline will do anything at all. Have you thought of giving him
some Echinacea with goldenseal. That will also help boost his immune system.
It's worth a try.
Your poor old man... I sure hope Charlie is feeling better soon. I'm sending
lots of healing vibes for kitty.

All my vets are always from South Africa! Everytime I go to the vets I seem
to see someone new and they are always from South Africa - always very good
and thorough though. I did see a Spanish vet once last year and he wasn't
used to rats at all, he acted really nervous around mine as if they were
going to rip his hand off! He said the Spanish didn't keep rats as pets!
He didn't seem to know an awful lot about them so called the other vet in -
a South African one!

Sue, I can't understand why you have been told Doxycycline isn't available
in this country (I'm in Derbyshire, btw) - at the end of May this year my
vet prescribed a combination of this drug and Baytril for one of my rats
after I asked him if we could give this combination a go. I was given the
Doxy (shelf name 'Ronaxan') in tablet-form and had to break it up into small
pieces to give the right dose.
Anyway I hope you have success with the Oxytetracycline and sending
well-wishes to Charlie - keeping fingers and everything crossed for his
recovery, let us know how he is.
