Firstly i would like to say a huge thankyou for all your best wishes for
Charlie.Forgive me for invading a rat group with cat chat but you will soon
understand why.Charlie was allowed back home today -he was suffering from a
flu-like virus although he had had all his vaccinations.Anyway, guess which
anti-biotic he was sent home with?Ronaxan!Or should i say -
doxycycline.Tracey has been treating one of her rats with it.I was told just
yesterday that it wasn't available in this country - is it me or has the
whole world gone mad!!!!!!!!  I am going to be on the phone first thing in
the morning to find out why the hell i couldn't have it for Beau.Anyway
thought you would like to know this crazy story.
Thanks again x

OMG! First, I hope Charlie is doing better and the doxy will help.
Second...what the hell is wrong with that vet? Did Beau see the same vet as
Charlie? I sure hope you can get the doxy for Beau now...
Don't worry about invading our NG with kitties... we love all animals
here... :)

Thanks Joanne,Charlie is on the road to recovery thanks to a plate of tuna
followed by some chicken. He is one spoilt boy!Yes,they saw the same vet
within five minutes of each other. She is actually a very good vet -maybe i
didn't make myself clear and she thought that i was interested in Vibravet
only.I am going to see her again on Friday, hopefully it can be sorted.

Sue... perhaps the problem is not being able to prescribe it for a small
animal. Perhaps you could ask the vet to just prescribe extra for your cat
so that you could then give it to Beau. Would the vet do that do you think?
You could perhaps bring in the drug chart from RMCA.

I hope this helps...

Good idea Joanne... I took the Drug Chart into my Vet so she could see for
herself what I was on about...LOL

That's unbelievable Sue!  The vet who told you Doxycycline wasn't available
in this country, only for the very same practice that she works at to
prescribe said drug to another of your animals, must have been in ga-ga
land - beggars belief doesn't it?

So glad to hear Charlie is on the mend!  Let us know what the vets say when
you ask them why you were told Doxy wasn't available for Beau.

Hi Tracey,
I just wanted to check a few details with you before i go back to the vet on
Friday.Charlies Ronaxan is in 20 mg tablets. Is that the same as yours. How
much do you give your rat?
Thanks in advance

Louie was only on the medication for about ten days back in May.  From what
I can remember I recall the vet saying they didn't make small enough doses
for pets as small as rats so he had to break 20mg tablets up into little
pieces for each of the doses.  I think each 20mg tablet was split into about
8 pieces then one tiny piece=one ratty dose.  Each dose was given twice a
day.

Sorry I can't be more accurate.

When I get doxy for my rats, I get it in liquid form!!!!  Much easier to
give an accurate dose.

What lovely news ..:)  The Syringe of Doxycycline I have has specifically
written on it.. "For Cats and Dogs".. so I can see no reason why it can't be
given to the Ratties..:)  I suppose for some Vets they don't want the
responsibility if they prescribe medication off license ..:(
Regards Kate

Sue, I came up with this page... I'll keep looking though...

http://www.auspigeonco.com.au/order/ordering.html

Usually, most places on the net require a vet note before they will dispense
anything any vet med.
