I don't think my "sweetie" will last the night....If you remember, I had
been treating her with baytril for Myco. Although she didn't seem to get
much better, she wasn't getting worse....tonight she's lying on her side,
with labored breathing....please say a prayer for sweetie.....
thanks,
Sue

hi sue
I havent been hanging around here a lot lately, but I try
to keep reading the posts.
actually my sweet mumu is going through the same as your sweetie.
he looked a bit tired on wednesday, and on thursday night he was
completely down, panting, hardly eating and drinking.
I really thought he wouldnt make it through, poor thing.
I took him to the vet today (I even took him to work, lucky I
could, to check on him and go straight to the vet after work),
who told me it was impossible to make the difference bewteen
myco and ----- [urg forgot the name, I must have read it a 100
times before in rattie ressources, I'm too tired to check],
and well he prescribed 2 antibiotics (baytril and some
doxycycline) plus a thing to clear up his lungs.
poor mumu has taken his meds like a champ, been licking off
some yummy baby food, and is happy to drink through the syringe.
now he's resting from his very hard day, and I'm sure he'll be
better by the end of the w-e.
just to say that I understand you completely, I'll have a thought
for your sweet pea till both our guys feel better.

Well, she made it through the night and she's baring hanging on...but she
is. I've been giving her water through a syring. I've been holding her
most of the day and into night. I wish she would pass. I keep telling her
it's okay to go....But she keeps fighting. Her heartbeat sounds like a
rapid jack hammer....
Does anyone know if Baytril and doxycycline can be bought at the farm
stores? I don't have anyone around here that will treat rats. I even
called my vet for the dogs and ask her to give me the baytril and
doxy...explained that I KNOW what's wrong with her etc....but they wouldn't
.....it really pisses me off. Unfortunately, I don't think the meds would
work now. She seems to be too far gone. Thanks for all your well wishes. I
will let you all know when she passes to the bridge.

Sue, I'm so sorry to hear that.
It's bad enough wondering *if* this will happen, but utterly heart-breaking
just sitting waiting for it. I'm just off to the vet's this morning with a
similar problem with my little Sayuri (luckily the Saturday vet has more
knowledge of rats than their resident "small animals expert")
Our thoughts are with you and your little sweetums; be brave for her.

Sue,
As you may know,i had a real tough time getting doxy for my Beau.In the end
i went to another vet across town ,took all my info from the rat medication
chart with me and thankfully was allowed to try the baytril/doxy combi. It
is working really well.I did have to sign a disclaimer that i was prepared
to take the consequences of giving unlicensed meds but as we all know on
this group it really is the only thing that seems to have an effect on
myco.Ask your vet again and say you are willing to sign a disclaimer .
Its awful that you and sweetie are having to go through this -they fight
right to the end to stay with us and it is heartbreaking. My thoughts are
with you and sweetie.

Sue, this is exactly what I went through with my little Oscar several months
ago - he seemed to keep hanging on and on. He had suffered from myco all
his life and was on and off anti-biotics throughout. If you are having to
give her water through a syringe I think the time is near. The day Oscar
died I just knew it would happen within the next few hours so I gently
picked him out of his cage and took him to his favourite place on my pillow
in our bed, layed down beside him stroking him and talking to him until he
passed. He took his last breath just after I had whispered that I would see
him again someday.
My thoughts are with you, I know how hard it is. Give a little kiss to your
sweetie from me.
