Hi All,

Just a quick question to ask you guys if any of you can recommend a good
place for rescuing ratties in the UK - Preferably around the Herts, Beds &
Bucks area? Would prob go as far as London but due to ratties not really
liking big journeys we need to stay as close to home as we can get.

My boyfriend and I love our ratties and were sadly bereaved again last week
when we lost Zeusie :o(  We always get our ratties from a family run place
near here, but we have only ever had 2 rats only JUST make it to 2 years.
The others have always not even been 15 months. We don't know whether this
is due to the breeding going on at "Animal Crackers" although nothing seems
untoward there and the ratties always seem very happy and sociable, but we
thought perhaps we would look for additional places to buy kittens as we
know we are not going to be able to not get more ratties in the future, or
to look to adopt/rescue neglected rats??

I've always gone straight for babies as I love to see them grow and for
their personalities to develop, and with them not having a very long life
expectancy, babies always seemed a better option as you'd have longer with
them. Al loved Zeus and has decided he'd like an older rat that needs love
and attention and who already has his personality. I am not against the idea
as I have so much love to give to all ratties!! Hehehe

Any advice/tips/recommendations would be gratefully received :o)

Tania, you could try the blue cross in Bristol, but if you could try
http://www.ratplanet.co.uk/ as they are a couple in London who have over 500
rescued rats and they would love the opportunity to give a home to a few
lucky rats. Please look at their website as they pay for all the rats out of
their own pockets and I know that Steve gets up very early to make them all
porridge for brekkie, and they do a wonderful job, but what a Christmas
pressie -to be able to rehome a few of their rescues!!!.

Merry Christmas

So sorry about your recent loss... it sure is hard losing our sweet pet.
I don't blame you for trying somewhere else... not making it to 2 years is
worrisome and hard... I would definitely try elsewhere and see if the line
can be stronger.
Good luck!

Hello Tania,

Sorry to hear you lost Zeus, I know it is so hard when they go  :-(

I do not know your area, so can't recommend any specific places,
although you obviously could try organisations such as the Blue Cross,
RSPCA etc - some centres will take rats and some won't even within the
same organisation, so it is worth phoning round.

I just wanted to say how rewarding older rescue rats can be.  My first
"old boy" was Taz, who came to me aged 18 months, and lived here for
over a year before I lost him in November.  He was a lovely rat and I
wouldn't have missed having him for the world.  When I took him on I did
worry about how I would cope if he died a couple of months later, but I
would still have been glad he had a happy home in the time he did have.

Older rats are more set in their ways, but also seem to want so little
to make them happy, they are often real lap rats and very relaxing!  Taz
taught me not to overlook the older rats, and I currently have Alfie (2
years 3 months) and brothers Quin and Isaac (approx 19 months) who all
came to me aged 18 months or older.  They are all on my website if you
would like to have a look.  http://www.furryfeet.co.uk/rat.htm
