People who feed junk food to their pets, including pet rats, are literally
killing them:

But, well, no doubt it's killing the people too.

"Of what are you afraid, my child?" inquired the kindly teacher.
"Oh, sir! The flowers, they are wild," replied the timid creature.

Personally my rats have a better diet than me :-)
It is quite sad to think though people are feeding pets junk food, all pets
will eat and eat without knowing what it is doing to them, so it is our job
to make sure their diet is controlled.

True. It's a sad, sad state of affairs. Apparently one in five children in
UK are obese too.
We don't eat much junk food, we are vegetarians and eat a balanced, healthy
diet. We do indulge now and again with an Indian or Chinese take-away or
pizza, but these are things I don't feed to the rats anyway. They do get a
few bits of crisps now and again and some chocolate, but then they do say a
little bit of what you fancy now and again does you good...

Same here. I give my rats a lot of treats but most of the time these
are just tiny tiny bits of something 'bad'. I give them a bit of
cheese or chocolate or crisp about the size of half a rice kernel, or
I let them lick no more then a drop of custard or yoghurt from my
finger. This way I can give them treats more often which is great
because I love the way they jump out of the cage when I approach! I
know they don't love me.. they just love the goodies.. but I don't
care...

I thought Chocolate was bad for ratties? I have never thought about giving
them choco, just tuna and sometimes a bite of my hot dog.
