One of my rats has lost a lot of weight recently. And his coat has
become strange -- At the base of the hairs, there is a sort of sticky,
powdery stuff. And the hairs are more yellow at the base.
It shouldn't be an external parasite, because his brother who lives &
sleeps with him is fine. The brother used to be the small one. Now
he's fat and the other one is getting bony.
Are these (weight loss and gunk on the skin) symptoms of one thing? Or
two things? Maybe the gunk at the skin is an effect of him not
cleaning himself properly?
Perhaps the "gunk" on his fur is a build up of his natural oils... If he is
unwell he may not be grooming himself as well as he use to...IF your Rat is
getting on in age then weight loss is to be expected. A trip to the Vet for
peace of mind though and a chance to rule out anything else might be a good
idea. Best of luck..:)
