Do you think if I got both pet rats and birds such as Cockatiels,
they'd play together?

I don't recommend letting a rat "play" with any other species except his own
kind. You never know what can happen. It's better to be safe than sorry.

When I was a kid, we had two cockatiels and a rat.  The cockatiels
were terrified of the rat.  Once, my brother's cockatiel landed on top
of my rat's cage (the bird wasn't supposed to be in my room, where the
cage was) and Io (the rat) bit off one of his toes (we think -- it
might have just gotten caught in something).  Another time, my brother
put the cockatiel in the rat's cage, and she reacted aggressively.
Don't worry, my brother's smarter now.  :)  Also, Io liked to chew on
feathers, and didn't much care whether they were still attached to a
bird or not (she tried to grab my cockatiel's tail through the bars of
his cage at least once).

So no, I wouldn't recommend leaving rats and anything else,
particularly smaller birds, alone unsupervised.

Rats still have wild instincts when it comes to other species. They'll kill
birds in a HEARTBEAT no matter how sweet they are to other rats and people.
DO NOT put your bird anywhere near the rat! I've heard so many horror
stories and almost lost a cockateil myself with my first rat. They'll pretty
much kill anything smaller, the same size, or even sometimes a lit bit
larger then they are... by far though mice and birds are the ones I hear the
most horror stories about.

On the other hands rats LOVE feathered toys... they like chasing them. :)

I wonder if you don't already know the answer to that one....

It is not safe to mix rats with any other species but it's own (and us
humans of course!).  There are always the odd exceptions - I've even heard
of a rat and cat being the best of friends - but it's best to assume if you
were to put such two creatures together one would end up hurt or dead.  So
no, don't even try it.

I really hope you are joking????  As an owner of both I cringe at the
thought.  I actually had an unfortunate accident and my cockatiel was bitten
by my rat.  Not only was he hurt, I felt like crap and I had a hard time
getting over that my sweet rat would do that.  When I calmed down I
understood nature took over.  Please adopt one species or the other and
read, read, read on appropriate care.  And I too suspect you knew the answer
to this question.

Why flame me just for asking a question? Are you saying I shouldn't
ask questions?

Well then I am doing a better job than you because I asked if it was
OK before actually allowing a rat to get near a cockatiel.
I don't have either one yet, but I thought it might be cool to have
both if they could be friendly to each other.

NO I didn't know the answer. You never really know something until you
find out from experience, your own or someone else's. I don't like to
assume one way or the other. I like to find out facts. I saw a small
furry animal play with a bird on TV. That's why I asked. So don't give
me a bunch of crap and act like I'm trolling or stupid or something.
There's a guy who's on TV a lot, I think his name is Mike Mallone. He
often has a ton of different kinds of animals around him, birds, cats,
dogs, rodents, all at the same time, and all of them getting along. I
think this guy must be giving other people ideas of mixing different
animals.

Ok, you are correct in asking and I apologize.  There are so many people
that do ask questions in the rat group that sound sometimes kind of mean
towards animals and having lived through the experience I explained I jumped
to conclusions.  I do believe though that the on show you watch they do say
that the  gentleman has these animals specially trained and please don't try
this at home.  It's strange you mention that show because that did pop into
my mind where you might have gotten the idea.  I do stand by my advice of
read up on the animals.  I would give that advice to anyone.  Even after
getting bitten my cockatiel still heads for the rat cage so I need to watch
him like a hawk (FYI I didn't let him by the cage it was an accident).  Some
cockatiel advice that no one tells you about:  get rid of your TEFLON
pans, breadmakers, curling irons, etc.  Even at low heat they emit a gas that
can be fatal to your bird.  Even your ironing board cover has a coating.  If
you don't plan to spend many hours with your bird get 2(same for the rat).
Cockatiel live a very long time so plan on a long term commitment.  Also
read up on female and egg laying (that's a whole 'nother issue!)  My vet
recommended "Birds for Dummies" has everything you need to know. My other
advice...if you thought I was kind of nasty the cockatiel group isn't very
friendly at all (least it didn't used to be) and will rip you to shreds
(they did me).  So I will be more than happy to answer any questions you
have and apologize if you already knew any of the above! Forgive me?  And
sorry gang I know this is the rat group..........

I do agree with Joanne Cockatiels are very inquisitive and they can rip your
hand to shreds if they wanted. I have one of each sex and they will fly to
anything and have a look.
Also my boys Teddy, Badger and Stuart can smell my chipmunks on my hands
from a foot away. So any contact with other species is a definite no no!
