Stripe: Update

Stripe had her second mammary tumour removed today. Despite the fact that
she still had some (myco?) breathing problems before the op, she thankfully
got through it ok. She's on another week of injected baytril to finish the
infection off. Of course, we still can't be 100% sure that the breathing
problems aren't due to tumours in her lungs, but we're hoping it's not
that.

We now just have to wait a couple of days for her to open the wound (little
rascal)!

I played the waiting game too regarding removing stitches.. Sure enough the
next day he had done one and each day after one more would be removed...
fortunately the wound never opened up...  Im sure someone is watching over
Cairo..:)  Best wishes for your Rattie too.

Regards Kate

In the end, was she spayed or did you and your vet decide against it? Either
way, please let us know how it goes for Stripe. I'd like to keep into
"records" if spaying does help and how many rats have their lumps recur with
and without a spay.
My sister has three girls develop tumors in the last 3 weeks. She is
extremely devastated but has decided to get them removed and spayed as well.
Again, at our vet's insistence, the spay will decrease the chances of tumor
recurrence. So we'll see how they go...
And after those surgeries are done, my sister has decided to get the rest of
her girls spayed. All 9 of them. I'm sure she'll be paying the vet's
mortgage. :(

We decided not to have her spayed. Judging by her bad breathing for the
rest of the day after the op, I guess this was probably a wise choice.

I have investigated with the vet and the expert at Holland & Barrett
headoffice whether there are any drugs, diet changes or herbal remedies
which will reduce the production of oestrogen. There appears not to be.
