Odd Clicks & Breathing

A few weeks ago one of our boys got very thin, and was on his way out. Before
he passed he started to breathe funny, breathing heavy and opening his mouth as wide as he could and making clicking noises. The next day he passed. I though
t it was just something odd because he was old and sickly, however, today
my largest and healthiest rat started doing the same thing. Breathing heavy,
opening mouth wide and making clicking noises.

Has anyone had similar experiances, what is it and what can i do?

thanks.

I would say definitely myco, but this mouth open and gasping usually happens
in the last stages of the disease so i don't understand why your largest and
healthiest rat would be doing this. Are you sure he has never had a myco
attack before.I would take him to your vet to rule out any other respiratory
infections.I am sorry i couldn't be more helpful. Please let us know how
things go with him.

Very nearly the same thing happened to me.  Eris (the healthier rat)
went to the vet about it, but when they took her in back to get an
x-ray, she had some kind of seizure and died, so I don't know what it
was.

It does sound like the end stages of pneumonia or lung disease. Rats
respiratory systems are so weak, thanks to the myco bacteria, it doesn't
take much for them to go from picture of health to death's door. But there
are clear signs: porphyrin, wet breathing, loud breathing, monkey noises,
chest clicking, wheezing, gasping, loss of appetite, always sleeping, change
in stool and urine and lethargy.
When you see 3 or more of these symptoms, it's time for help from a vet.
Also, another thing to consider, if there were no other symptoms and the rat
went from happy healthy to gasping, he may have lung tumors, in which case,
they grew fast and have taken over the lungs. There is nothing that can be
done at this point.
But if I were you, I would see a vet, get his lungs checked for sure...
Good luck,

Unfortuantly he just passed before we could get to the vet, he had several
seisures and then passed. Its really srange and we just didn't expect it.
He had no signs yesterday of this other then porphin, and he was eating
like a horse until this morning when he started making the noises.
We are taking our other 4 boys into the vet. I think one is in the late
stages of it, he is very thin like the first of our boys that passed from
it, unlike our health guy "merlin" who was almost 2lbs at time of death.

Does it hit older rats faster/harder? Merlin just turned 2 but didn't show
any signs. Now im very concerned for Maro who is 2.5 years and starting to slow
in walking but hasn't shone any sines of myco.

This is a very sad time for us.
Mishra July 2003 (2 yrs, old age)
Gadget  4 weeks ago (1 year, blood loos from tooth removal surgery)
Chopin 2 weeks ago (20 months, myco/lung deseise)
Merlin today (2 years as of monday, same as Chopin)

We are now left with chopin's twin listz who seems to have what chopin had,
Maro, Gizmo (Gadget's twin) and Visago (about 8 months old).

Our vet has agreed to do a free autopsy (sp?) on merlin to find
out what took him soo fast so that we can hopefuly prevent it
in the rest of our boys.

I will let you all know, thankyou for your help.

I'm so so sorry of your losses at this time. This is indeed troubling. It's
good that you are getting a necropsy done on Merlin. It's important to know
if you have something more than myco flare ups in your colony.

I'm so sorry you have lost so many of your little ones in such a short space
of time.  Respiratory disorders are common in rats and I have been through
the same thing with my rats over the years.  It must have been that bit
harder having them get so very ill as quick as they did.  It's good that
your vet is carrying out an autopsy, with Merlin being a healthy rat and so
very suddenly becoming ill.

I hope your remaining boys will be okay, and the vet manages to find
something helpful from the autopsy.

Take care and many well wishes for Listz, Maro, Gizmo and Visago.

Get your Rat to the Vet...  moreso if this behaviour led to the passing of
another rat....
