Homeade diet

Hi everyone,

After getting tired of picking out all the corn and nuts from the commercial
diets, I've decided to make my own mixed diet, and feed it in addition to
Hagen Nutriblock and Nutro Lite dog food.

I'm going on the suebee recipe I found online.  The only thing that went bad
was that I could not find Total Cereal.  Does anyone know what could
supplement for that?

Also, I couldn't resist picking up some extra things to possibly put in the
diet, but I wanted to run them past the experts first to make sure they're
okay to give:

1.  roasted dried chick peas
2.  An organic oatbran flake cereal.  Ingrediants:  Organic whole oat flour,
organic whole wheat flour, organic wheat bran, granulated bran, organic corn
meal, organic brown rice flour, organic barley malt extract, organic whole
wheat sprouts, and a trace of sea salt.
3.  I got some dried blueberries as a fruit, is this okay?

Thanks for any advice.

Sounds fantastic!!!
You can also add the multigrain Cheerios.
A substitute for  Total is Vector or Optimum, found at a Costco.

You couldn't find total?
I make my own grains too......I usually look for what's on sale.  Cherrios
also has a type with dried bananas, strawberries and blueberries....that was
a special little treat this time.  I found that my ratties don't eat many of
the flakes, so I don't use too much of that. They really like grape nut O's
and cracklin oat bran.....I kindof like those too!
Good luck and have fun!

Nope... I'm in Canada so maybe that's why I couldn't find it.  Yeah I was
pondering those cereals with the dried berries... but I wasn't sure if there
would be too much sugar in them or not..

In Canadam, you could probably find Total at Costco. But they don't have it
all the time...

We do about the same as you're trying, make a home-made mix based
mainly on Suebee's diet recommendations.  However, I've always avoided
the Total anyway because it contains preservatives (BHA or BHT).  I
also avoid any cereals with hydrogenated oils.

There are lots of good cereals you can find, especially at health food
stores, that have no hydrogenated fats and also contain good vitamin
supplementation, which is mainly why she recommends the Total.  One
we've found that's like that and has a lot of antioxidants is Kashi's
Heart to Heart.  Just one of many, though, that fit the bill as far as
we're concerned, and we rotate them frequently for variety and to keep
the guys interested.

Could someone please post the basic "receipe" or a link of where I can find
it???  Also, the only block food I can find in my area is the one sold in
small 1.5 lb boxes at Walmart....any suggestions where I can find a better
one online???  OR is the Walmart one okay???

Thanks!

I don't know about your Walmart lab blocks (brand?).  I'm like Ollie
(Kate) in that I don't use lab blocks, just a homemade mix as the
basic food source.  I don't have the excuse of being in New Zealand
for not getting them, though.  ;)

The ones in our stores near me all either have ethoxyquin, a
preservative which may be best to avoid for rats (that would be KayTee
brand, BTW), or some other preservatives, unknown ingredients,
whatever, so I won't get them and haven't bothered with ordering
something like Harlan Teklad online.  (BTW, there are varying opinions
about ethoxyquin -- see http://www.rmca.org/Articles/ethoxyquin.htm as
an example of one "pro" opinion -- but I just don't like KayTee food
products in general for other reasons too.)

You can get Harlan Teklad online from several sources, though, one of
them being http://www.rmca.org/Merchandise/supplies.htm  I don't know
if they are available cheaper elsewhere.

HTH.

Blueberries are supposed to boost a rat's intelligence and are also thought
to help prevent cancer, so a very good fruit to feed!

Well I sure hope so!!!  I paid almost 15 bucks for a couple handfuls, so
they had better do something good.... :-) :-)

Good thing!  They're not in season here right now, so I bought the dried
blueberries... man were they expensive.  But she's worth it... :-)

Whenever I buy blueberries I always seem to end up with ones that are
housing larvae of some type...

I always wash the blueberries in salt water so that the larvae comes
out...isn't that gross??
Ollie - 07 Mar 2004 23:52 GMT
Yup that's gross...
